The Lycoris flower is a flower that willingly fell into the underworld. Yama, feeling pity, refused, not wanting the flower to suffer in hell. Despite this, the Lycoris flower chose to linger on the path to the underworld, and finally, Yama agreed to let the flower bloom on the path, offering guidance and comfort to the souls leaving the mortal realm. The fragrance of the Lycoris flower possesses a special magic that can awaken the memories of the deceased from their past lives. When souls cross the River of Oblivion and drink the Meng Po soup, they forget everything from their previous lives. Those past experiences remain with the Lycoris flower, which absorbs all the souls' longing, yearning, and attachment to the mortal world, becoming the guiding flower for the deceased to the underworld. There is another legend about the Lycoris flower. Two spirits guarded it: a flower spirit named Manju (manju) and a leaf spirit named Saka (saka). They took turns guarding the Lycoris flower for thousands of years but never met. One day, they decided to defy the gods' rules and secretly meet. The flower and leaves appeared together at night, breaking the laws of life and death. This act angered the heavens, and Manju and Saka were cast into the cycle of reincarnation, cursed to be forever apart and suffer tribulations in the mortal world for all their lives. Each time Manju and Saka reincarnated, they would smell the fragrance of the Lycoris flower on the path to the underworld, remembering their vows of love, and swear never to separate again, only to be cursed again in the next cycle of reincarnation to never be together.
