The Backrooms (Part 1): An Internet Legend Born from a Single Photo
In May 2019, a photo appeared on the anonymous forum 4chan: yellowed wallpaper, a faded carpet, and a hallway under pale fluorescent lights stretching endlessly. There were no people, no furniture, no windows. Beneath the photo was a caption: "If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms. And if you hear something wandering in there, God save you, because it has almost certainly heard you." And so, a legend with no author, no plot, and no ending was born. Why could a photo of an empty room unnerve so many people? The key is the concept of 'liminal space': places that 'should be occupied but are empty' – school hallways late at night, deserted shopping malls after closing, gas stations in the early morning. Your brain is familiar with these scenes, but it can't find familiar people or sounds, creating an indescribable sense of unease. The Backrooms push this feeling to the extreme: a place that is 'familiar yet inescapable'.
