The Backrooms (7): Level 5, The Haunted Hotel

Pushing through a "Staff Only" door in a Level 4 office building, your feet suddenly land on a thick, dark red carpet. You're standing in a hallway, lined with dark wood doors and brass nameplates. The wall sconces cast a dim, yellow light, as if preserved by time. The wallpaper has an intricate pattern, and the air is a mix of old carpet, perfume, and a hint of damp wood. Welcome to Level 5—an old-fashioned hotel with no guests, ever. Everything here is frozen in a bygone era: the crystal chandelier in the lobby, the bell on the counter, the open guest register filled with illegible names. The stove in the kitchen is still burning, soup bubbles in a pot, but there's no chef. The biggest difference between Level 5 and the previous levels is that it has a master. Wanderers say that after midnight, the ballroom doors open on their own, and the sound of strings and laughter spills out, figures twirling, champagne glasses clinking—but the moment you step inside, the music stops, and all the "guests" turn to look at you simultaneously. It's rumored that no one who has entered the ballroom has ever left. There's also a contrary tale: some wanderers danced all night in the ballroom, only to wake up in a Level 4 office, wearing a coat that didn't belong to them. The only rule for survival on this level is simple: **Do not accept any invitations.** Don't respond to knocks on the door, don't answer the phone ringing in your room, don't eat the food from the room service cart. The hotel is very polite, it will keep inviting you—and its politeness is precisely what makes it so terrifying. Wanderers here experience extreme anxiety, gradually losing their sanity, and require almond water to survive on this level.
