Xiangyunsha (Commonly known as Langchou, Yunsha, also called Langshachou)

The only silk fabric in the world dyed with pure plant-based dyes, it was named 'Xiangyunsha' (meaning 'rustling cloud silk') because it makes a rustling sound when worn and walked in. Later generations affectionately called it Xiangyunsha due to the similar pronunciation. It is hailed as the 'soft gold' of the silk industry, and its unique traditional handmade dyeing and finishing techniques have been listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. Unique Craftsmanship Features The production of Xiangyunsha relies entirely on sunlight, soil, and pure natural plants. The core process includes the famous 'three washes, nine boils, and eighteen sun-dries': • Core Raw Material: Pure natural wild Kuzu root juice is used as the dye, and the iron-rich river mud from the Shunde and Nanhai areas of Foshan, Guangdong is used for covering and smearing. • Chemical Reaction: The tannic acid in the Kuzu root and the iron ions in the river mud undergo a chemical reaction under specific sunlight and humidity, giving the fabric unique physical properties. • Appearance and Color: The finished product usually presents a classic 'one side black, one side brown' (one side shimmering with black mineral luster, the other side a deep reddish-brown), with natural crackle patterns or subtle textures on the surface.
