I think comforting someone also depends on what they like. Honestly, I'm not great at comforting people either, but I feel like some friends just want you to listen to them vent, some friends want you to help them find a hobby to distract themselves, and some friends need their alone time, like going on a solo trip, eating and drinking, etc. I think it really depends on what method your friend prefers.
