Mystery Novel (First attempt, please be kind)
Chapter 1 Chu Anran received the call while in a quarterly summary meeting at work. He only noticed the incoming call from his younger brother Gu Qingci's university counselor after his phone vibrated three times. Without much thought, he pressed the answer button. The voice on the other end was urgent, speaking a long string of words, but Chu Anran only caught a few: "Hospital," "Poisoned," "Come quickly." Everyone in the conference room was looking at him. As Chu Anran stood up, his chair let out a piercing screech. He said, "Sorry," and walked out. By the time he reached the elevator lobby, his steps suddenly slowed, as if his legs had lost all strength. He reached out to brace himself against the wall, stood for two seconds, then continued forward. He was alone in the elevator. He lowered his head, looking at the tips of his shoes, his hand gripping his phone, knuckles white. The taxi ride from his company to the hospital took forty minutes. He sat in the back, staring out the window the entire time, his expression blank. The driver glanced at him in the rearview mirror, thinking the young man was eerily silent. But as they neared the emergency room entrance, the driver saw him suddenly cover his face with his hand, his shoulders trembling slightly. Just once, and then he quickly regained his composure. In the emergency room corridor stood a few people—the counselor and two of Gu Qingci's classmates. They made way for Chu Anran as he approached. He didn't look at them, walking straight towards the door to go in, but was stopped by a nurse. "The patient is still undergoing resuscitation. Family members, please wait here." Chu Anran stood outside the emergency room door, hands hanging loosely at his sides, his entire body rigid like a nailed-down tree.

AuthorThe tree in the place. The counselor walked over, opened his mouth as if to say something, then closed it. After a while, a girl with a ponytail couldn't help but walk over and whispered, "Qingci… he was fine in the dorm this afternoon, but after drinking a glass of milk, he suddenly took a turn for the worse…" She started to cry as she spoke. Chu Anran turned around and said, "Thank you" to her, his voice very light and steady. Then he leaned against the wall, tilted his head back, and closed his eyes. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down. Everyone in the hallway felt he was desperately trying to hold back tears. Two hours later, the doctor came out. Chu Anran was the first to approach him. He looked at the doctor's expression, the color draining from his face bit by bit. His lips parted slightly, as if he had something to say, but no sound came out. Every word the doctor spoke seemed to nail itself into the air: "We did our best. The poison entered his bloodstream too quickly; by the time he arrived, it was already…" Chu Anran didn't cry. He just froze, his whole body as if someone had pressed pause from the inside. He stared blankly at the doctor for a full five seconds. Then, slowly, slowly, he squatted down, under the stark white light of the emergency room entrance, burying his face in his knees. His shoulders began to shake violently, but no sound came out. The silence made everyone in the hallway feel breathless. Gu Qingci's classmates stood not far away, watching the young man squatting on the ground, trembling silently. One girl covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face. She remembered the proud expression Gu Qingci had whenever he mentioned his brother—"

Author"My brother can do anything." "My brother cooks really well." "My brother said he'd move in with me after I graduate." She remembered Gu Qingci saying his brother worked three jobs alone to support his studies. Thinking of these things, she felt the world was too unfair. No one found Chu Anran suspicious. This was normal. In everyone's eyes, Chu Anran was the good brother who raised his younger sibling from childhood. Their parents died early—everyone knew this. Chu Anran dropped out of school at sixteen to work, earning every penny for his brother's education. He had no life of his own, no romance, no entertainment; all his choices spelled out four words: For my brother. How could such a person harm the brother he raised with his own hands? The police quickly got involved. The forensic report indicated cyanide poisoning, with the source traced to the cup of milk Gu Qingci drank. A dorm mate had bought the milk from a convenience store, but tests showed the poison was injected after the milk was opened. This meant someone had come into contact with that cup of milk. The detective in charge of the case was named Zhou Yuanshan. He systematically investigated everyone close to Gu Qingci—roommates, classmates, friends, teachers. In Gu Qingci's phone contacts, a name called Lin Yu appeared frequently. Further investigation revealed that Lin Yu and Gu Qingci had once been very close, but shortly before the incident, Gu Qingci had unilaterally distanced himself from Lin Yu. Lin Yu had posted some emotionally charged texts on social media, one of which read: "If you don't care, then no one will have a good time." When Zhou Yuanshan found Lin Yu, this

AuthorHe thought for a moment and said he'd seen him once or twice. His brother said that was his very good friend. He paused slightly when he said this, his Adam's apple bobbing as if he were swallowing something hard to digest. He asked Zhou Yuanshan, "Was it really him?" Zhou Yuanshan said the case was still under investigation. Chu Anran was silent for a long time, then nodded and said, "That's good," before shaking his head as if he'd said the wrong thing, "I don't know what I want to say... I'm sorry." Zhou Yuanshan watched him leave the police station. The young man's back looked thin and frail, like a piece of paper blown by the wind. He leaned on the doorframe for a moment before disappearing into the sunlight at the street corner. It took Zhou Yuanshan a long time to look away. He thought that no matter what, this case had to be investigated thoroughly, not for any other reason than for the eyes of that young man just now—that look of having lost everything yet desperately trying to maintain dignity, he had seen it too many times in his twenty years as a detective, and each time it made his chest feel heavy. On the day Lin Yu's case went to trial, Chu Anran was not present. His lawyer appeared in court on his behalf and submitted a written statement to the judge. In the statement, Chu Anran wrote: "I respect the court's decision. I just want to know if my brother was in pain in his final moments." This sentence was included in the trial reports and was reprinted by multiple media outlets. Sympathetic posts about him flooded the internet. Some called him "the most heartbreaking brother of the year," while others said, "Why do good people always suffer misfortune in this world?" A comment from one netizen was pushed to the top:

AuthorHe gave everything for his brother, only to end up unable to keep him in the end. I hope he can live well." Lin Yu was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment. The moment the verdict was announced, Lin Yu suddenly burst into tears on the defendant's stand, crying and shouting, "I didn't kill him! I really didn't kill him!" As the bailiffs led him away, his cries echoed down the hallway for a long time, like the final mournful cries of some wounded beast. Some people in the gallery were moved, some shook their heads, and some whispered, "That's what murderers always say." No one noticed that in the last row by the wall of the gallery sat a young man in a dark gray coat. He made no sound throughout the trial, neither crying nor laughing, with no expression. He just sat there quietly, like a stone, like still water, like an ordinary victim's family member coming to seek justice for his brother. After the trial, he left through the back door, walked through an alley, turned into an old residential building, went up to the sixth floor, and took out his key to open the door. The room was very dark, the curtains drawn, with little furniture. There was a faint smell of disinfectant in the air. He walked into the bedroom, sat by the bed, and reached under the pillow to pull out a photograph. The photo showed two boys, one taller, one shorter, standing under a tree in full bloom. The shorter one's eyes were curved in a smile, while the taller one wasn't smiling, but the corners of his mouth had a very faint upward curve. Gu Qingci had pulled him to take this photo when he was ten. After it was taken, Gu Qingci wrote two words on the back of the photo: "Gege (older brother)." Chu Anran turned the photo over.
