Latest AI Voice Cloning Scam Exposed: If You Get a Call from a Relative Asking for Money, Do This First
"Dad, it's me..." The familiar voice on the other end of the line sounds anxious, saying they urgently need money and specifically instructing, 'Whatever you do, don't tell any other family members' – this is the latest AI voice cloning scam. 🔴Scammer's Four-Step Process Scammers first use AI-generated voice impersonations to call, using a caring tone to ask about your well-being and lower your guard. The next day, they'll use urgent reasons like 'needing money for a house purchase and suddenly being hospitalized' to ask for a loan, emphasizing secrecy. Anxious elders, following instructions, hand over cash and their bank card to a designated 'friend.' It's only when their actual child returns home that they realize their retirement savings have been emptied. 🔴Real Case The National Police Agency shared a story where a woman received a call impersonating her daughter who had moved far away. The voice was identical. The caller claimed to need money for a house purchase and hospitalization. The woman hastily borrowed money from other family members to gather the funds and handed over the cash and bank card to a stranger. She only discovered she had been scammed when her daughter returned to Taiwan, by which time her savings were almost completely drained. 🔴Police's Anti-Scam Guidelines The Criminal Investigation Bureau reminds everyone to use the 'Three-Second Silence Method' when receiving calls from unknown numbers. If the other party remains silent, don't speak first. Wait quietly for three seconds, then hang up directly to prevent your voiceprint from being captured. Whenever a call combines 'a relative is in trouble + demands a transfer + demands secrecy,' hang up first, then use your own saved contact number to call the person back and verify. It's recommended to pre-arrange a 'code word' with your family to distinguish authenticity. This kind of scam is pretty nasty. If the voice sounds familiar, it's definitely easier to let your guard down. You really need to be careful😨
