The Secret Beneath the Round Belly: Capybaras Actually Have Long Legs
Capybaras, the world's largest rodents, can weigh up to sixty kilograms and are often mistaken for 'sofas without legs.' But the truth is: they have a pair of hidden long legs. Their front legs are short, and their hind legs are long, making their proportions excellent among rodents. However, they love to squat, sit, and soak in water, and combined with their fluffy fur and round bellies, their legs are perfectly concealed. Thus, the capybaras you see always look like a patch of grass growing on a meatball, moving slowly. In reality, capybaras have strong hind legs that allow them to stand up and elevate their bodies for better observation. When encountering danger, they can run quickly, with short bursts reaching speeds of thirty-five kilometers per hour. With a push of their long legs, even an alpaca can't keep up. They also have slight webbing between their toes, acting like built-in paddles when swimming. In the water, they propel themselves with their hind legs, moving gracefully like submarines. On land, however, they often remain in a 'folded mode' because it conserves energy and keeps them warm. What you think are short legs are actually long legs tucked into their bellies. Capybaras are social animals, often living in groups of dozens, grooming each other and enjoying hot springs. Despite their long legs, they are inherently lazy; they'd rather sit than stand, and soak rather than run. This is why zoo capybaras are always seen squatting, as if saying: 'Legs? What legs? I'm just fluffy.' Even more amusingly, when a capybara sits, its hind legs fold to its sides like two hidden slices of toast. When they stand up, they instantly transform from a meatball into a long-legged hunk. Next time you see a capybara, don't call it short-legged. It's just retracted its long legs, much like you snuggled in your blanket during winter. Capybara: I'm not fat, I'm long-legged, I'm just too lazy to show it off. True long legs dare to remain hidden. So, Pompo-legs are actually really long 😮
