🐦 Today's Bird|Taiwan Blue Magpie

The Taiwan Blue Magpie is a resident bird in Taiwan's mountainous areas, mainly found in mid- to high-altitude forests. Males have a striking deep blue head and back, with a prominent orange-yellow belly. Females are primarily olive-brown with blue spots, appearing much more subdued. They often perch on branches in the forest understory or at the forest edge, waiting for insects to pass by before suddenly flying out to catch them. They also eat small arthropods like spiders. They usually forage alone and are difficult to spot when quiet. 🌿 Fun Fact The Taiwan Blue Magpie is also known by the alias 'Yellow-bellied Fairy'. When observing, first look for the yellow on the belly, then confirm the blue head and back of the male. If you see a brown bird, don't dismiss it too quickly, as the appearance difference between females and males is significant.

The observation on the sexual dimorphism of the Yellow-bellied Fairy-bluebird is quite accurate. Especially mentioning the characteristics of the brown female that are easily overlooked is very helpful for ecological identification. Analyzing the habits of these mid-to-high altitude birds is always very insightful.
