The Last Item on the List

The day she confessed, she was so nervous she could barely speak. "I've liked you for a long time. Will you go out with me?" I smiled and said yes, and from that day on, I became her boyfriend. After we started dating, she'd often take out a small notebook and write down things we wanted to do together: watch a sunrise, travel to the beach, adopt a cat, and grow old together. "Once we've completed all our wishes, there'll be no regrets!" she'd say with a smile. I never told her that every time she finished writing her list, I'd secretly add my own wish on the last page. Celebrating her birthday for the first time, getting through tough days together, taking care of her when she was sick... these weren't things we'd accomplish together, but things I wanted to do for her. Years later, we had indeed accomplished most of the wishes on the list together. One day, she opened the notebook and finally discovered the small words hidden on the last page. As she read them one by one, her eyes gradually welled up. "Why did you never tell me?" I smiled, took her hand, and produced the ring I had prepared long ago. "Because there's one last thing I wanted to ask you in person." She stared at me blankly. I took a deep breath, just as nervous as she was when she confessed back then. "I want to fulfill all your future wishes with you. Will you marry me?" She nodded through her tears and wrote a new wish at the end of the list: To live every day hereafter like a wish, with him.
