The Most Hardcore Legend of WWII: The 'War Bear' Wojtek
In 1942, near Hamadan, Iran, a young boy captured a Syrian brown bear cub and sold it to Polish II Corps soldiers stationed there for a few cans of meat. The soldiers fed it condensed milk and named it Wojtek, meaning 'smiling warrior.' Thus, it made its home in the military camp. It moved with the company from the Middle East to Italy, learning to wrestle, drink beer, smoke cigarettes, and even salute. It ate and lived with the soldiers, fully integrating into camp life. In 1944, when the unit boarded a ship in Egypt, the commander refused to allow animals on board. Unwilling to abandon it, the soldiers had it officially enlist. Wojtek was awarded the rank of Private, assigned to the 22nd Transport Company, becoming the only combat bear to officially enlist. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, this brown bear, weighing over 200 kg, calmly carried ammunition crates under artillery fire, never dropping a single one. Afterward, the company's emblem was changed to a bear holding an ammunition crate. Did it really smoke and drink? It did drink beer, but sometimes the bottles contained water. Smoking is more accurately described as 'eating cigarettes'; it would take a lit cigarette, take a puff, and swallow it. These behaviors stemmed from being raised by soldiers from a young age, wanting to belong to the group, and thinking it was one of them. After the war, it was stationed in Scotland with the unit. In 1947, when the unit was disbanded, it was sent to the Edinburgh Zoo, where it died in 1963. It was unaccustomed to being with its own kind but would wave to visitors who greeted it in Polish. Today, statues stand in Warsaw, Edinburgh, and Cassino, and both Poland and Scotland have issued commemorative stamps, honoring the bear warrior who fought for Poland without ever setting foot on Polish soil. What a sentient bear 😮
