Four Dhyanas, 18 Heavens - Part 17 | The 9 Heavens of the Fourth Dhyana: Sudassana Heaven Category: Fourth Dhyana Heavens of the Form Realm Location: Third of the Five Pure Abodes 'Sudassana Heaven' is the third level of the Five Pure Abodes. 'Sudassana' can be understood as 'beautifully appearing' or 'clearly manifesting'. In the traditional Buddhist cosmology, this heaven belongs to the Five Pure Abodes, serving as the dwelling place for noble ones who have attained the Anagami (non-returner) fruit. In sequence, the Five Pure Abodes are Aciravasa, Atapa, Sudassa, Atanaka, and Akanistha. These five heavens differ from the general heavens of the Form Realm, which are born from meditative concentration and karma. Traditionally, they are specifically associated with noble beings who have severed ties to the desire realm and are continuing on the path to ultimate liberation. The name 'Sudassana Heaven' evokes notions of 'manifestation' and 'clarity'. From a practice perspective, when desires and afflictions no longer cloud the mind, observations of phenomena tend to be less distorted. However, this is a contemplation inspired by the name and should not be taken as the complete definition of Sudassana Heaven as described in the scriptures. Wisdom, as spoken of in Buddhism, is not merely knowing more things, but also includes discerning one's own attachments and biases, and no longer mistaking temporary feelings for the entire truth. Seeing clearly is not just about seeing the external environment, but also about seeing how one's own mind perceives that external environment.
