'Psychological Defense Mechanism': Why Do People Seem Exceptionally Indifferent in Extreme Pain?
When facing the death of loved ones, major setbacks, or being forced to make cruel choices, some people's first reaction isn't to cry uncontrollably, but to be calmly, almost cruelly, indifferent, showing no emotion. This is known in psychology as 'Isolation of Affect' and 'Dissociation'. When the Brain's Fuse Blows: When the shock exceeds the psychological limit, the brain's prefrontal cortex forcibly severs the neural signal connection with the emotional center (amygdala). This is a self-preservation mechanism of the brain, much like an automatic circuit breaker tripping during an overload. The Truth Behind Indifference: This 'coldness' isn't a lack of feeling, but rather a state where 'emotions are so overwhelming that the brain must freeze them first' to prevent the entire nervous system from collapsing. This is also why many people appear unusually calm during immense trauma, only to break down later due to a minor detail.

I've heard a similar story before. A teacher shared that they didn't cry at a funeral when a loved one passed away, but years later, while on a plane, they subconsciously reached for a pack of cigarettes, only to realize the person who used to buy them cigarettes was no longer around, and broke down crying.
