The Transfiguration of Christ

Introduction to "The Transfiguration of Christ" "The Transfiguration of Christ" is one of Raphael's late works, drawing from two biblical stories: Jesus revealing his glory on the mountain, and his disciples encountering a suffering child at the foot of the mountain. The work was completed by his studio after Raphael's death. The composition is divided into two areas, upper and lower. In the upper section, Christ floats in the air, with figures on either side extending outwards, creating a nearly symmetrical arrangement. Below, the crowd, with their interlocked gestures, twisted bodies, and varied gazes, evokes an atmosphere of chaos and urgency. This contrast between the upper and lower parts is the work's most striking feature. The upper half is light and bright, with figures posed with the stability of classical sculptures. The lower half is filled with shadows and intense movement, with the viewer's eye constantly darting between the figures. Color also plays a role in the composition. The bright hues of Christ's robes make him stand out against the sky, while the red, blue, and yellow garments of the figures below interweave, giving a clear visual rhythm even to the complex crowd. While Raphael was originally known for harmonious and balanced compositions, this late work displays stronger emotions and dynamics. It is often considered a key piece transitioning from the High Renaissance to Mannerism, showcasing how Raphael combined idealized human forms with dramatic scenes.
