If there's a reward for doing it, and a punishment for not doing it. And punishment isn't just scolding or hitting them. It's about making them take responsibility for their actions. For example, if they promise to get 100 on a test and get it, their allowance increases. If they score below 60, their allowance gets cut. Replacing hitting and yelling with actual consequences fosters a child's ability to think independently.
