Why do I get uncontrollable 'hiccups' after eating or drinking cold water?

It's because your 'Phrenic Nerve' gets 'agitated' by stomach distension or temperature changes! Hiccups are medically known as 'Singultus'. Between our chest and abdominal cavities lies a crucial muscle like a parachute called the 'diaphragm', controlled by the dedicated 'phrenic nerve' and 'vagus nerve', responsible for our smooth breathing in and out. When you eat too fast, overeat and expand your stomach, or gulp down carbonated drinks or ice water, the distended and cooled stomach directly presses and irritates the adjacent diaphragm and phrenic nerve. This nerve stimulation triggers minor 'nerve spasms', causing the diaphragm to contract violently and involuntarily. This strong inhalation force causes air to rush in, forcing the glottis to close rapidly within milliseconds, producing the signature 'hic!' sound!
