Peach Blossom Mountain Bird - Zhang Daqian

This artwork depicts a scene composed of rocks, peach blossoms, and a small bird perched on them. Though the subject is simple, it effectively showcases Zhang Daqian's mastery in expressive bird-and-flower painting. The rocks in the painting are rendered with bold brushstrokes and rich variations in ink tones. The peach blossom branches extend outwards with vigorous lines, while the flowers and leaves are depicted with lively dabs of color that are bright and vibrant. The artist did not meticulously paint each petal or painstakingly detail every feather of the bird, but rather captured the form and spirit of the subjects with precise brushwork. What's particularly admirable in this painting is the arrangement of 'movement and stillness.' The rocks are stable, the branches extend outwards, and the small bird rests within them, giving the composition a sense of stability while also brimming with life. The contrast between the delicate beauty of the peach blossoms and the ruggedness of the rocks prevents the artwork from becoming overly sweet or fragile. Zhang Daqian's bird-and-flower paintings are often overshadowed by the fame of his ink-wash and splash-ink landscapes and his Dunhuang figure paintings. However, small pieces like this precisely reveal his command of traditional expressive brush and ink techniques: with just a few strokes, seemingly casual, each brushstroke is actually controlled to dictate the rhythm and balance of the composition.
