There's a mini-game like the watermelon game, so I'm not defending and just killing time with the mini-game for the time quest.

I keep losing because I'm not used to the defense. The art is pixelated and they all look almost the same...

I think I'll play until the Time Quest rewards are gone. Character movement is still difficult. It gets stuck in the middle-bottom defense area, and sometimes it stops where I wanted it to move, so I have to choose routes carefully to avoid obstacles.

The only way to level up quickly is by watching ads. Grinding through dungeons is too slow because the rewards suck, so watching ads is faster. Quest rewards are pretty good though, so you gotta do 'em!

I'm having trouble progressing through the defense battle due to a lack of resources.

This might only apply to the early stages, but if you use more archers and prioritize upgrading the stage's overall buffing archer (fixed damage) first, it becomes much easier. You don't even need to worry about movement controls.

I'm playing mainly for the Time Quest rewards. I don't really get the story, but there are characters from various eras like goddesses and Sengoku warlords, but it's all jumbled up and confusing. Maybe dual-wielding is their selling point, but it doesn't seem that appealing to me.

Perhaps the meaning of dual-wielding is because there's a defense game where enemies attack from above, below, left, and right towards the defense point at the bottom center on a fixed screen, and also a side-scrolling mode like Battle Cats? The characters are a mix of gods and Japanese warlords, lacking cohesion. The defense part is hard to control, and the side-scrolling also feels a bit off-tempo. It gives the impression of a game made by combining existing similar games.
