Stop with the animals

Why do I have to protect dogs and cats in a cutesy plot??? It either leaves a bad taste in my mouth, makes me neglect the characters, or makes the characters neglect me. I think this is another one of those unsettling bugs. Stray animals should act like strays and run from humans; I don't want unnecessary involvement or killing.
