The Efficacy of Medicine
My dear ladies, how do you do today? ð¹ Have any of you ever pondered the form of medicine? Tablets, powders, granules, liquids, capsules... there are so many kinds, aren't there? They are all designed in shapes that are best suited to maximize their effects after absorption into the body. While some medications can be changed from tablets to powder form after consulting with a pharmacist, it's generally best to take them as they are. In care facilities, for residents who have difficulty swallowing, we sometimes crush tablets right before administration. However... this is also a topic of much debate, and it can be difficult to know what the right approach is. - Ensuring necessary medication is taken, even if its efficacy is slightly reduced. - The principle that medication should not be crushed at all. ...There are so many different opinions... But for medications that absolutely must be taken, I believe it's best to crush them for administration... After all, they were prescribed because they are necessary... It's a difficult issue, isn't it...

Swallowing. That's when your swallowing ability has weakened, isn't it? You can't just say 'If you don't drink it, there's nothing we can do!' ð First off, doesn't the Doctor realize you have difficulty swallowing? Ask them to change the prescription to something you can take!

Hello Yuen-sama. Your work in elder care is truly wonderful. I find it more difficult to swallow powders myself, and I suppose aspiration becomes an issue as people get older... It's quite a dilemma. For children, (after doctor's confirmation) pharmacists can turn medication into powder, wouldn't that reduce the workload for everyone on-site? ...Though I do feel that the burden of management... might increase... It's truly a dilemma.

Yuyuen-sama, good day to youð¹ I've heard that some pills can be crushed without changing their effect, while others cannot. When I was young, I couldn't swallow pills, but I had to take medication in pill form. I consulted with my doctor and took them crushed. Even after I learned to swallow, for a while, I was clumsy at it and would often dissolve pills and capsules in my mouth, and I remember the taste was far from deliciousððŠ It's a difficult topic, but I believe it's better to take them, even if the effect is diminished, than not at all. For those who have difficulty swallowing, not only will they struggle to take them properly, but there's also a risk of choking, so they can't just take them as is. However, I think it's best to consult with a pharmacist or doctor, just like you, Yuyuen-sama, and like I did in my childhoodâš If there are alternative medications available in a form other than pills, you might be able to switch to those, and if crushing is truly not allowed for a specific medication, they will likely inform you.
