The Raft of Carneades

Ladies, how are you doing today? 🌹 Has everyone heard of the 'Raft of Carneades'? The Raft of Carneades is a thought experiment in ethics and law. Imagine a shipwreck where all the crew members are thrown into the sea. A man adrift in the ocean finally finds a small raft that can only support one person and clings to it. Afterward, another drowning man tries to grab onto the same raft. Is the act of pushing away the person already on the raft and letting them drown, in order to save one's own life, considered 'right'? That is the question. According to Article 37 of the Japanese Penal Code, 'An act committed out of necessity to protect one's own or another's life shall not be punished (constituting necessity).' However, since the weight of both lives is the same, the debate continues as to whether the act of surviving by excluding another person can be fully justified... The Raft of Carneades is a philosophy that intertwines the human instinct to 'want to live' in extreme situations with ethics and law. As for me, I don't particularly feel like living... so I will yield it to those who wish to survive. That would be more meaningful...

This might be a bit of a tangent, and perhaps a bit of a morbid observation, but humans actually float without doing anything as long as they're breathing. Seawater has a specific gravity of about 1.02 at 25°C, so a human with a specific gravity of 0.98 who inhales can keep their face above water. Conversely... if you raise your arms to grab a board, only your arms will be buoyant, and you'll sink. Then there's the case of calling for help. A person whose lungs have exhaled has a specific gravity of 1.03... they'll sink too. It's ironic that giving up is more likely to lead to survival than fighting over a board or calling for help. So, these two who fought over the board... Perhaps they could have both survived if they hadn't fought, right?

It reminded me of Leiji Matsumoto's 'Ouka' from 'The Sound of Thunder Fleet'. To put it crudely, it's not a work for young ladies. It's about the special attack weapon 'Ouka', its pilot protagonist, and the crew who carry him. 'Cut me loose and escape. I alone am enough to die!' the protagonist pleads repeatedly. Yet, they fly, risking their lives─ This story is about everyone risking their lives, but I believe both trying to save oneself and risking one's life are part of human nature. This is the work that made me cry the most. And when I went around saying, 'Marriage? If you can't cry watching this, I don't want you~', I've been single ever since 😭 I couldn't end on a serious note.
