Words are indeed important.

As I am a poor noble, my family has no territory. Therefore, I work diligently in the territory of my patron. Then one day, some of the people I work with expressed their gratitude to me in a peculiar way. They were individuals employed under disability support programs. However, I wasn't treating them specially because of that; in fact, I was working them hard. So, I found it strange and asked why. It turned out that some of the superiors and seniors had been speaking to them as if they were talking to small children, or only in a commanding tone, which had caused considerable dissatisfaction. Apparently, everyone had been informed beforehand that they had intellectual disabilities. Therefore, they tried to communicate in a way that was easy to understand, but ended up doing something strange because they weren't used to it. Coincidentally, I was on vacation on their first day of work, so I hadn't been told about it... On the day I met them, I noticed they had difficulty moving their legs and arms, and I mistakenly assumed they had physical disabilities. (I had heard that disability employment was coming soon.) So, I made sure not to have them carry heavy loads or write, and I spoke to them normally. They said that my 'normal' attitude made them very happy. ... I almost cried...

It's something I've heard before, not knowing how to interact with people with disabilities and ending up treating them specially. I don't really understand it myself, so I'm the type of person who can't treat anyone specially. I'd just chat about mundane things like, "What other jobs did you do?" or "Whoa, you're faster than me!" 😅

Excuse me, please just let me talk normally for now. Thank you, it makes me really happy when you treat me normally like that. ...Especially if it's mild. From now on, please don't mind that I have a disability and treat me the same as everyone else. Of course, if I seem to need help, please help me then.

That's right. They have pride too, and the capacity to understand... Your sincerity must have gotten through to them.

Thank you all so much. No one is at fault in this matter. With their permission, I quietly relayed their concerns to my superior. I'll also write down what I learned about the whole situation during the subsequent morning assembly, which felt more like a reflection meeting... The reason I ended up speaking in a commanding tone was because I thought that explaining at length would cause confusion due to a lack of understanding, so I tried to give short, clear instructions, which resulted in that tone. The childlike way of speaking was a result of overthinking how to follow the advice from a training session on how to treat subordinates, which a new graduate with no prior work experience like part-time jobs had received, to avoid it being considered workplace harassment. Everything that happened was the result of everyone's earnest efforts and actions not going as planned. There are also part-time employees who left because they couldn't properly connect with them and felt they couldn't work together. This is absolutely not a bad thing; if you can't agree with the company's decided policy, there's nothing that can be done about you leaving. Currently, we have a specialist in disability employment visiting us, and I think we are all doing better now than we were on that day. I haven't seen any troubled expressions lately.
