I used to be a school refuser

I'm an adult who used to refuse to go to school. I used to attend school so much in elementary school that I could aim for a perfect attendance award, but I started refusing to go to school in middle school. The reason, simply put, was human relationships. The homeroom teacher took a long-term leave, and during that time, a substitute teacher told me, "It's your fault that the homeroom teacher is on long-term leave." This made me distrustful of people, and I couldn't eat at school. I could eat at home, so my family didn't understand and often scolded me, saying, "Why can't you do it normally?" I was the youngest of three siblings, and my older two were excellent students. At the time, the term "school refusal" was just starting to emerge. My second-year homeroom teacher visited my home diligently, but I couldn't trust him because of what the substitute teacher had said. I could only manage to attend school from the nurse's office, and even then, I would quickly feel unwell and leave early. Around the latter half of my second year, a counseling room was established, and if parents applied, students could attend the counseling room or participate in classes. However, due to my ignorance, I didn't understand and worried, "Why can't I go to the counseling room?" Consulting with the school counselor also required a parental application. It seems strange looking back now.

I see you have such a past. I can only imagine how painful it must have been to carry that alone, misunderstood by everyone. But the fact that you can write about it now, isn't that proof that you're moving forward little by little? It must be tough looking back, but please don't push yourself too hard.

There was a monthly training camp. It seemed the goal was to train both body and mind, with activities like forced mountain climbing or nearly being sent to a deserted island camp. I made friends, but since it was a private school, the quality of teachers was poor. Some teachers would pick on students with intellectual disabilities who couldn't protest. There was also a teacher who entered the room where students practiced their cultural festival dance and said, "It smells sweaty." When students started crying after hearing this, the same teacher, despite saying it, began lecturing them tearfully, saying, "How could you say such a cruel thing?" Even though it was supposed to be a school for children with school refusal issues, the reality was quite different.

It's tough when adults aren't on a child's side and even cause harm. Sometimes I think that if teachers like the homeroom teacher or parents had been on my side, I wouldn't have become a truant even when bullied by classmates... It really makes you wonder who will protect you if parents get involved in everything, even school counselors, and don't help with family problems. When I become a parent, I've decided I'll definitely listen to my child's words and be on their side as much as possible. Experiences from student days can linger into adulthood, so let's try to praise ourselves now and fully enjoy what we love to heal our wounds ٩(๑´v`๑)۶

That sounds like an unimaginable trauma 😳 I had four classmates from the same neighborhood, and at home, I was always compared to others and criticized for being inferior. Sometimes, my father would abuse me to the point of breaking my bones, so I hated being at home and studying. However, I went to school to play with friends during breaks and after school. That's why I think if I had been your friend, I could have helped you experience a more enjoyable school life 🥺 The fact that you're writing this now suggests that things might be getting a little better? Thank you for staying alive 😊 There's nothing more troublesome in the world than human relationships, so you might face difficulties with them at work too. When that happens, it's okay to run away and take a break. You can start your life over at any age. My grandmother passed away last year at the age of 104. When my father and aunt were sorting through her belongings, they found mostly her own things, which made me realize that life is for those who enjoy it the most. My grandmother often told me, "Since I was born crying 'ogaa,' I want to be smiling in the end," so I understand how difficult it is to maintain that mindset.
