First, let's learn the hands. You don't need to worry about scoring yet, just focus on how to win. Once you've learned the hands, try to stop 'calling' (鳴く). If you don't call Pon, Chi, or Kan, and instead go for a 'Menzen' (面前) hand with a Riichi (リーチ), you can sometimes get a higher score when you win.
