What's Fun About Memento Mori's Content?

I've been thinking about it a lot, and the more I think, the more I realize the visuals and music are great, but I just don't get the fun in the battle elements. Maybe PVP (or even PVE) isn't necessary? Does it just end with character affection...? But is there value in continuing to spend that much money on a game like this every month? If the core elements of character progression and battles, which make up more than half the game, are mediocre, then the game's value drops accordingly. Battles have auto-skip, and the outcome is decided by the progression and team setup before the battle, so there's a lack of strategy. You can't cover for a disadvantageous matchup with skillful play, so if you can't win, you can't win. Is it because there's no room for player input during the crucial battle phase that the battles feel uninteresting? While you can change your team composition after seeing your opponent, it doesn't lead to enjoyment of the battle itself. The progression and PVP elements are strong, but the actual battles are boring. So, the content is also boring? Is that it? This is troubling. Or is the fun of Memento Mori, aside from the visuals and music, the long-term grind for materials and character development? People who get into it might really get hooked... Actually, I think Memento Mori is fun up until you can equip exclusive weapons.
