The Grasshopper

This refers to the grasshopper from Aesop's fable, 'The Ant and the Grasshopper,' which most people are familiar with. Although it's in the same family as crickets, it's slimmer and flies better. I wish I could live as comfortably as the ant without working like the grasshopper haha

Horse Chestnut

These are horse chestnut trees, currently dropping a lot of fruit. They look similar to chestnuts, but are toxic and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even respiratory distress if ingested, so never eat them. The fruit of the horse chestnut is also called 'marronnier' in other words. If the fruit's husk is smooth, it's a horse chestnut (Japanese marronnier), and if the husk has hairs, it's a European horse chestnut (European marronnier). They look like chestnuts, but never eat them~

Periwinkle

It's called periwinkle because new flowers bloom every day from summer to fall. They come in various colors like pink, purple, and white. It's part of the dogbane family, so it contains toxic substances, so be careful not to eat it.

Kousa Dogwood

It's said to be named 'Kousa Dogwood' because it bears fruit that resembles dogwood berries. They're starting to ripen now. I looked it up, and the berries are edible and sweet. I should try them if I get the chance, haha. This Kousa Dogwood is a tree that beautifully blooms with star-shaped white flowers in spring, but those white 'flowers' are actually not flowers, but a type of leaf called bracts that surround the flower. It's a Kousa Dogwood, impressive for its white bracts in spring and its red, dogwood-like berries in autumn.

Crabapple, a relative of the apple

It bears many fruits smaller than apples, right? It's smaller than an apple and is a crabapple, often planted for landscaping rather than for consumption. While edible, crabapples are sour and astringent, so they're typically used for making preserves or liquors rather than eaten raw.

Broad-shouldered praying mantis

There's a praying mantis on a lilac tree. It's a nymph of the broad-shouldered praying mantis, which undergoes incomplete metamorphosis.

Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia)

Took this picture when I went to pick up the kids from school. These are the crape myrtle flowers you can see a lot around this time. I've seen many pink crape myrtles, but there were also white and purple ones. Maybe it's because the crape myrtle flower is the school's official flower, but there are crape myrtles of various colors.

Rhino Beetle I'm Raising at Home

I found a newly emerged adult rhino beetle and I'm raising it at home. I decorated its enclosure with oak branches and bark I gathered from the hill behind my house. I also quickly bought some fruit jelly from Carrot Market and I'm feeding it to him. He eats about one every two days. I have first-grade twins, a boy and a girl, and they love animals and plants, so they're very interested in the rhino beetle too. Does anyone else raise insects like this at home~~~
