Why does Kimbap spoil so quickly?

Kimbap, the nation's beloved lunchbox, is convenient to eat in one bite. However, this food called Kimbap spoils quickly, unlike a typical lunchbox. Why does it spoil so fast? First, although Kimbap is easy to eat, it requires quite a complex preparation process. It contains various ingredients like seaweed, rice, egg garnish, ham, and pickled radish. Many of these ingredients retain moisture, making them prone to bacterial growth. During preparation, touching the Kimbap with bare hands or gloves can easily transfer bacteria from the cook's hands. The lukewarm temperature of the Kimbap also makes bacteria more active. The rice in Kimbap is seasoned with sesame oil and salt. While sesame oil is flavorful, it oxidizes easily in the air, and not much salt is used, providing little preservative effect. Kimbap can spoil easily at room temperature within half a day, so it's best to eat it right after it's made. If you have leftover Kimbap, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator, or I recommend coating it with egg wash and pan-frying it into a savory pancake.

Why Does Inflammation Occur?

When you go to the hospital, you might often hear that "your inflammation levels are high." So, this inflammation seems bad for the body, but why does it happen? 🤔 Inflammation is broadly divided into two types: Acute inflammation and chronic inflammation. 'Acute inflammation' is a normal response where white blood cells attack invaders and heal tissues when bacteria invade or you get injured. The symptoms of swelling, fever, and pain are signs that this healing process is actively occurring. 'Chronic inflammation' is a state where the immune system is overloaded due to stress, unbalanced diet, aging, etc., causing the body to be continuously attacked even without invaders. This chronic inflammation becomes the cause of various diseases. In other words, inflammation itself is an essential function, but when it becomes chronic, it negatively affects the body. In the case of acute inflammation, the five cardinal signs – 'fever, redness, swelling, pain, and loss of function' – are visibly apparent. Chronic inflammation often manifests not with distinct pain or fever, but with vague and persistent discomforts like subtle fatigue, indigestion, general body aches, and fogginess.

Why do men grow beards?

Beards protect the skin on your face, especially your chin and cheeks, from strong UV rays, reducing the risk of skin cancer or sunburn. Also, in cold environments, mustaches and beards act as a natural scarf, preventing the lower part of your face from losing body heat. Similar to nose hair, beard hair also acts as a primary barrier, filtering out airborne dust, pollen, and harmful substances from entering your respiratory system directly. There's also a hypothesis that beards served as a shock absorber in the past, cushioning impacts to the chin and lower face during physical altercations or fights, thus reducing injuries 😅 So, with all these apparent benefits, why don't women grow beards? 🤔 After puberty, men experience a surge in male hormones (testosterone), which stimulate hair follicles, leading to the growth of thick, coarse beards. However, women only produce about 5-10% of the amount of male hormones that men do, which isn't enough to sufficiently stimulate hair follicles. Furthermore, female hormones also tend to inhibit body hair growth.

Anyone else's hips make a 'clicking' sound?

Do any of you experience a clicking sound from your hips while exercising or walking, but you've ignored it because it doesn't hurt? Mine makes a sound when I do slow burpees. This condition is said to be more common in young women. So, why does this sound happen? It's caused by friction when the tendons or fascia around the hip joint rub against a protruding part of the bone. This condition is called "snapping hip syndrome." It's commonly seen in women with a narrow waist and relatively wide outer hip width (an "hourglass" figure), and in pregnant women whose lower body pressure has increased due to weight gain. If there's no pain, it might not lead to a serious condition immediately, but if the sound repeats, friction can accumulate in the surrounding tissues over time, potentially developing into inflammation or pain. If you hear a sound during exercise, I recommend doing sufficient hip stretches and reducing the speed and range of motion of your movements. Massaging gently with a foam roller is also a good idea.

Why You Get Thirsty When You Exercise

When we exercise, our core body temperature rises from a minimum of 37°C to a maximum of 40°C, depending on the intensity. This is because a large amount of heat is generated as your muscles contract. Your brain secretes sweat to prevent your body temperature from rising too much. Sweat is composed of water and salt, causing the body's water to evaporate quickly. As water is lost through sweat, the amount of water in your blood decreases. This thickens the concentration of your blood and causes a slight drop in blood pressure. The thirst center in the hypothalamus of your brain detects these symptoms. This thirst center sends us a strong signal to "drink water," which is what we perceive as thirst.

Palm Oil: Why Do People Dislike It?

Palm oil is used extensively in everything from snacks and chocolates to instant noodles. While companies favor it, why do people dislike it? Palm oil is extracted from the oil palm, which primarily grows in tropical climates of Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. To meet demand, vast amounts of greenhouse gases are emitted during the process of burning and logging huge areas of primary forests, causing environmental pollution. As forests are destroyed, numerous wild animals like orangutans, elephants, and rhinos lose their habitats and are pushed towards extinction. Human rights issues are also pointed out, such as the displacement of local indigenous people or farm laborers being exposed to toxic pesticides without safety precautions. What about health? Although palm oil is a 'vegetable' oil extracted from the fruit of the palm tree, unlike typical vegetable oils (like olive oil or canola oil), it contains about 50% saturated fat, making its composition similar to animal fats. It's comparable to lard or beef tallow. Excessive intake of saturated fat can raise bad cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases.

Panic Attacks: How Much Do You Know?

You've probably heard stories about people experiencing panic attacks. While we know that panic attacks involve feelings of fear and anxiety, do you know why they happen and how to cope with them? A panic attack is literally a sudden state of panic. Approximately 11% of adults experience panic attacks each year, and they occur about twice as often in women as in men. They can be triggered by extreme stress or fear, but they can also occur suddenly for no apparent reason. When in a panic, various symptoms can manifest simultaneously, with the uncontrollable fear reaching its peak within 10 minutes before gradually subsiding within a few minutes. Typical panic attacks naturally disappear within tens of minutes, so during that time, it's sufficient to help the person calm down with stable posture and breathing. Since suppressing a panic attack is nearly impossible, if you feel premonitory symptoms, let's take deep breaths and ask for help.
