Desperado: A technique where, when your piece is doomed to be captured no matter its move, you capture an opponent's valuable piece before being taken. En Passant: When an opponent's pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position, and your pawn is on an adjacent file, you can capture the opponent's pawn as if it had only moved one square. Fork: A situation where one of your pieces can attack two or more of the opponent's pieces simultaneously while remaining safe. (Royal Fork: A fork that also puts the opponent's king in check.) Battery: A tactic where a bishop moves to a square where it lines up with a queen or promoted bishop, delivering check or checkmate. Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board (the 8th rank), it can be exchanged for a queen, rook, knight, or bishop.
