Even tiny nematodes, just 1mm long, that live by eating bacteria in the soil, are said to avoid those bacteria by smell if they get a stomach ache from eating them. Information about dangerous food sources is passed down to their offspring, so their children also avoid those bacteria. Fruit flies are said to get drunk on substances similar to alcohol when they experience heartbreak. Plants also communicate through chemical reactions; they've been communicating with each other via chemical signals. They respond differently to creatures that threaten their survival by eating their roots versus those that don't pose a significant threat and can be appeased by sacrificing some leaves. Caffeine and nicotine are actually among the chemical compounds found in plants.
