The "Hwachaechakyaeng" is a truly unique, pastel-colored small bird, whose name itself seems to suggest vibrant colors. Males, in particular, have feathers mixed with purple, blue, pink, and yellow, making them look as if painted with watercolors. They are about 8.5 to 10 cm long and weigh a mere 6 to 8 grams, making them very small and light birds. They primarily inhabit the high mountainous regions of the Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau, northwestern China, and Central Asia. They particularly favor dry, sparsely wooded areas like alpine shrublands and forest edges at altitudes of 2000 to 5000 meters. After the breeding season, they may move to lower altitudes as the temperature drops. Their diet mainly consists of small invertebrates like insects and spiders, which they diligently search for by foraging through branches and bushes. During colder seasons, when insects become scarce, they also eat small fruits and seeds. For breeding, they build round nests using moss, plant materials, and spiderwebs, hiding them within shrubs. They typically live in pairs during the breeding season and form family units or flocks with other small birds afterward.
