How to find hope in theocentrism?
Since it was recently Chuseok, I've been wondering if religion is actually helpful. My whole family is religious, so I figured there must be a reason people believe, but I personally felt more powerless when I tried believing. I was once deeply inspired by humanism. The idea that people possess potential in themselves... that gave me a lot of hope. But some people say that's human arrogance. They say humans can't do anything, only God can, so you should believe in God... How can one find hope in such a mindset? I'm not asking whether to believe or not, but I'm curious about the mechanism by which people find hope in theocentric thought.

Your concerns likely stem from a precious desire for human dignity. Theocentrism, by sometimes acknowledging our limitations, can offer a sanctuary where one finds peace by leaning on providence amidst suffering beyond our control. Either way, the hope you hold for life truly feels precious.

It's the easiest way to escape reality. When things go in an unwanted direction due to your own fault or mistake, you're given two choices. Start over slowly from the beginning or blame fate. Which is easier? Blaming fate is definitely easier. I think people believe in religion through self-rationalization, feeling like 'If I believe in God, God will save me.' The essence of religion is to emulate it, but I think current religions around us are focused on praying and worshipping. (This isn't to say everyone is like this, but it's based on most people I've met in my life. This is a purely subjective opinion and I have no intention of criticizing any specific religion.) Therefore, I believe people turn to religion as a form of escapism.

I'm not religious either, but when I see Christians around me, they seem to attribute both happy and sad events to Jesus. I don't know about happy occasions, but when something sad or difficult happens, they seem to think, 'There's a reason why this trial was given to me,' which makes them appear less burdened. And everyone is bound to fear death, but wouldn't it be less scary if they had faith that there's definitely heaven after death?
