Lobster
There's a saying that lobsters live forever. These animals don't die of old age but in other ways. Most animals' cells wear out and stop reproducing as they age. However, lobsters continue to reproduce cells even when old, and their bodies actually keep growing. This is thanks to an enzyme (telomerase) that extends cell lifespan, which remains active throughout their lives. That's why they can get so big. The largest lobster ever recorded, caught in Canada in 1977, weighed 20.14 kg and is in the Guinness Book of Records. Wow, a lobster of that size is estimated to be several decades or even close to 100 years old. So, how do they die? Even after fully grown, they molt their shells once every year or two, but when they get old and it becomes too difficult, they give up molting. Then, infections occur in their old shells, and they die from diseases.

Isn't it telomere, not telomerase?

Biological immortality... what a peculiar fate. Is living forever a blessing, or an endless weariness? In the end, it's over when you can no longer shed your skin, hmm.

AuthorI thought I saw telomerase, but is that not it? I'll search again and leave a comment.

AuthorTelomeres are at the ends of chromosomes, and telomerase is indeed a repair enzyme.

Even as we age, our cells are active, so why don't we shed our skin when things get tough?
