Can Simply Lifting Your Heels While Sitting Lower Cholesterol? An Analysis of the Soleus Muscle Exercise
Deep within your calf lies a special muscle called the soleus. Though it makes up only about 1% of your body weight, it's known as the 'second heart.' The secret lies in how it generates energy: while regular muscles first consume their own stored glycogen during exercise, the soleus muscle derives about 96% of its energy directly from glucose and fat in the blood. This means activating it is like starting a 'fat-clearing pump' in your bloodstream. A study published in 'Medicine' in 2025 confirmed this effect. 43 patients with coronary heart disease, in addition to their regular medication, performed seated calf raises (at least 8 minutes each time) three times a day. After three months, their LDL ('bad') cholesterol decreased by 35%, HDL ('good') cholesterol significantly increased, and systemic inflammation markers also notably declined. A 2022 University of Houston study showed that doing this exercise after meals can reduce blood sugar fluctuations by about 52% and decrease insulin demand by about 60%. The method is simple: Sit upright with your feet flat on the floor, knees at a 90-degree angle. Keep the balls of your feet on the ground, and slowly lift your heels until you feel a stretch in the back of your calf. Hold for 1-2 seconds, then slowly lower them. The key is to lift and lower slowly, using your ankle strength. Avoid quickly shaking your legs or standing on your tiptoes – standing primarily activates the superficial gastrocnemius muscle, making it difficult to engage the soleus. However, it's crucial to understand that this exercise is a supplementary health measure and cannot replace medication or conventional treatment. The strongest evidence currently comes from patients with coronary heart disease; its effects on healthy young adults are still inconsistent. If you have ankle or knee injuries, consult your doctor first. Moving your feet while sitting~ isn't difficult, you can give it a try~

Interesting Conversation Share
Today at lunch, I accidentally overheard a conversation between an engineer and an OP at the company. OP: It's lunchtime, aren't you going to eat? Engineer: I want to check the tray. OP: I just checked it for you. Don't you trust me that much? Engineer: Of course I don't trust you! You should never trust others easily! OP: Am I that untrustworthy!?? Engineer: It's not about that. If I make a mistake that affects me today, I can accept it. But if someone else makes a mistake that affects me, who can accept that? So I'll put in a little extra effort to check it myself. If something goes wrong, I can accept it and won't blame anyone else.

Boost Your Sleep Quality: 10 Things You Should Never Do Before Bed
Sleep quality isn't just about the hours you clock in; your pre-sleep habits are crucial. Here are 10 seemingly ordinary habits that, if done daily, can leave you feeling more tired: 🔷 Sleeping with the lights on: A bright room can easily disrupt your sleep rhythm. It's better to fall asleep in darkness and quiet. 🔷 Sleeping with your mouth open: Waking up with a dry mouth and throat is common. Pay attention to whether you habitually breathe through your mouth. 🔷 Going to bed needing to pee: Trying to sleep while holding it in can actually make your sleep restless. Go to the restroom before bed. 🔷 Pillow is too high: A higher pillow isn't always better. If it's too high, your neck will be in an unnatural position all night, leading to tighter shoulders and neck in the morning. 🔷 Sleeping on your back for extended periods: If you snore heavily or have difficulty breathing when sleeping on your back, you might need to consider if your sleeping posture is the cause. 🔷 Wearing tight underwear to sleep: Sleep is a time for relaxation. Tight clothing can feel constricting. Switching to loose, breathable sleepwear is more comfortable. 🔷 Sleeping with makeup on: No matter how tired you are, don't let makeup and oils stay on your face all night. Cleansing before bed reduces the burden on your skin. 🔷 Falling asleep hugging your phone: What starts as a quick scroll can easily turn into half an hour, eating into your sleep time. Lying in bed, scrolling often makes you more awake. 🔷 Lying down immediately after a heavy meal: This can increase the burden on your stomach. It's more comfortable to sit for a while after eating before going to sleep. 🔷 Going to bed angry: If your emotions are too intense, your mind won't stop racing. It's harder to fall asleep than if you relax first. These habits may seem minor, but their long-term accumulation can significantly impact sleep quality. Gradually cooling down your emotions and body before bed is key to truly restful and fatigue-relieving sleep. Eh... I don't exactly fall asleep hugging my phone, but it's true that I tend to scroll later and later 🤣

Has anyone been bitten by a fire ant?
As the title says, I've been bitten a total of three times. My job requires me to water flower beds, and yes, there are still old buildings around these days, so I have to manually haul hoses to water them. The first time I was bitten, I thought it was just a regular small ant because I stepped on their nest. My feet got a lot of blisters, but I figured some medicine would fix it. I didn't see a doctor, just applied over-the-counter medicine, wore my sneakers as usual, and dragged it out for a month. The blisters wouldn't go away, so I finally went to a dermatologist. The doctor took one look and sternly asked, "Why did you come so late?! It was almost developing into cellulitis!" I was shocked. Honestly, I thought it was just a common Taiwanese red ant bite, and I didn't understand why it was so serious. The doctor said the toxicity clearly indicated a fire ant bite, and I shouldn't have waited so long. Luckily, I'm not allergic to ant venom, or I wouldn't have made it this far. The anti-inflammatory drugs were covered by health insurance, but the ointment and breathable bandages were out-of-pocket, and the follow-up visits before I fully recovered really cost a lot of money and time. The foot in the photo is in the process of healing (including the first and second bites), as I deleted the more gruesome photos. The hand is from the third time; I was bitten in the morning and it was swollen like that by evening. Some ask if this counts as a work-related injury. It does, but I didn't apply for it. When I calculated it (including the cost of the diagnosis certificate), if I really applied with the company, I would have to pay an extra 50 NTD. I only applied for medical insurance the first time; I didn't apply for subsequent ones for fear of the insurance becoming void. The insurance only covers the out-of-pocket health insurance fees, not the cost of the diagnosis certificate or self-paid items, let alone the significant waiting time for dermatology appointments. In short, I'm really not that lucky; I get bitten but don't win the lottery!
