Amazing Concrete

Seeing this book suddenly reminded me... There was an episode in Peppa Pig where Daddy Pig owed the library for a book, and it was this 'Amazing Concrete'. He was 3 years overdue... 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What is Made in PRC? Another Label for Chinese Manufacturing

'Made in PRC' means 'Made in the People's Republic of China.' PRC is an abbreviation for People's Republic of China, and it's generally equivalent to 'Made in China.' This label appeared around the early 2000s. After the 2008 'poison dumpling' incident in China, international consumers became suspicious of 'Made in China.' Some manufacturers began using 'Made in PRC' to reduce negative associations. It became more common around 2013, with marketing considerations. It has also appeared in Taiwan. One netizen shared that a mouse packaging in a general store was labeled 'Designed by Japan, Made in PRC.' Media reports indicated that some products used PRC as the country of origin, making it difficult for unfamiliar individuals to associate them with Chinese manufacturing. For Taiwanese consumers, seeing PRC can be directly understood as 'Made in Mainland China.' Legally, US Customs does not accept PRC as a valid country of origin marking; it typically requires 'Made in China,' etc. Most imported goods in Taiwan do not mandate country of origin labeling, but if labeled, it must not be false or misleading. If it is indeed manufactured in Mainland China, labeling it 'Made in PRC' generally does not constitute a false origin declaration. In summary: Made in PRC is another English expression for 'Made in China.' Honestly, although it seems to have been around for a while, this is the first time I've ever seen 'PRC.' So they knew 'MIC' had bad connotations, huh? 🤣

Thai-style Spicy Money Shrimp Cakes (Easy Rice Cooker Version)

Traditional shrimp cakes require high-temperature frying. Here's a recipe for an improved version using a rice cooker to steam chewy, firm cakes with less oil and fewer calories. They're still fresh and springy! Ingredients: Main: 300g shrimp, peeled and deveined (pat dry), 30g pork back fat (or fatty pork) for richness (optional). Aromatics: 1 tsp minced garlic, a little minced cilantro stem. Seasonings: 1 tsp fish sauce, a pinch of white pepper, 1 tbsp potato starch, 1 egg white. Instructions: 1. Make the paste: Pound the shrimp with the back of a knife (leaving some texture is good) and mix with the minced pork, aromatics, and all seasonings. Stir and pound until sticky. 2. Shape the cakes: Form the shrimp mixture into thick patties (you can use small round bowls to shape them or press them flat on a heatproof plate). 3. Steam in the rice cooker: Add 1 cup of water to the outer pot of the rice cooker and steam until cooked through and firm. 4. Cut and serve: Once steamed, cut into bite-sized pieces and serve with Thai sweet chili sauce for a delicious treat!

Thai Lemongrass Steamed Chicken Wings (Simple Rice Cooker Version)

This dish combines the unique aroma of lemongrass and fish sauce. You don't need to fry it over the stove; steamed chicken wings in a rice cooker are just as tender and flavorful, with a rich Southeast Asian flair. Ingredients: Main: 6-8 chicken wings (washed and patted dry). Aromatics: 1 stalk lemongrass (chopped or bruised), 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1 chili pepper (chopped). Seasonings: 1 tbsp fish sauce, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 0.5 tsp sugar, a pinch of white pepper, a splash of rice wine. Instructions: Marinate: Mix the chicken wings with all aromatics and seasonings. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (or proceed directly if short on time). Steam: Place the marinated chicken wings and sauce in a deep dish. Add 1 cup of water to the outer pot of the rice cooker and press the cook button. Serve: Once cooked, let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. It's savory and delicious.
