Accomplices in Kaohsiung Nanzih Murder Case Increase to 8, Main Suspect Detained

A horrific murder case occurred at a car dealership in Nanzih District, Kaohsiung, in the early morning of September 30th. A 22-year-old man, surnamed Mu, suspected his colleague of the same age, surnamed Zhang, of stealing 100,000 NTD and not returning it. Mu allegedly colluded with the dealership owner, employees, and others to torture Zhang for several hours with a hot melt glue gun and sticks, leading to his death. Afterward, they placed the body in the trunk of a car and drove from Kaohsiung to Taitung in an attempt to abandon the body, eventually returning to the Nanzih Police Precinct to surrender. Initially, only Mu surrendered, but after an in-depth investigation by prosecutors and police, the number of accomplices involved has increased to 8. The main suspect, Mu, has been ordered by the Qiaotou District Court to be detained for two months without bail, while the other 7 accomplices are still being interrogated. Police investigations revealed that Mu and the deceased, Zhang, were both employees at the car dealership and car wash. Zhang had only been working there for about 1 to 2 months. Around 1 AM on September 30th, Mu, along with the 25-year-old dealership owner, surnamed Lin, a 23-year-old employee, surnamed Liu, and friends surnamed Wu, Yang, Chen, and Ye, a total of 8 people, negotiated debt issues with Zhang at the dealership. After the negotiation failed, Mu allegedly used a hot melt glue gun, about 1 meter long, to repeatedly beat Zhang on the head, buttocks, and limbs. The torture lasted for 2 to 3 hours. Zhang lost consciousness amidst his cries and eventually died from his severe injuries. After the incident, Mu moved the body into the trunk of the car belonging to the owner, Lin, and drove towards Taitung in an attempt to dispose of it. He also discarded the weapon, the hot melt glue gun, in the mountains of Pingtung. He then returned to Kaohsiung and drove directly to the Nanzih Police Precinct around 10 PM that night to report the crime and surrender. Upon opening the trunk, police discovered Zhang's body curled up inside and immediately arrested Mu. By reviewing surveillance footage and license plate recognition systems, the police found that the dealership owner, Lin, and others were involved in assisting with moving the body. The case is...

'Guai Guai' Union Launches Indefinite Strike Demanding Relocation Compensation

The 'Guai Guai' (a Taiwanese snack brand) Zhongli factory is embroiled in a labor dispute after its parent company, Sandi Group, sold the factory land to ASE Group. The 'Guai Guai' Zhongli Factory Enterprise Union launched a strike at 5 AM on October 2nd. Originally planned as a one-day 'warning strike,' the union decided to escalate it to an indefinite strike during an emergency general meeting on the afternoon of the same day, with 94% of members voting in favor, due to the company's failure to engage in negotiations. The union criticized the company for prioritizing profits, alleging that the chairman repeatedly broke promises and had an inconsistent stance on relocation and closure plans, with no written records from multiple negotiation attempts. The 'Guai Guai' Zhongli factory has been operating locally for over 57 years. In July of this year, news suddenly broke that the land was sold, and employees only learned about it through media reports, facing the dilemma of forced transfer or resignation without any compensation. The union applied for labor-management dispute mediation with the Taoyuan City Government, which failed twice, leading to a strike vote on September 18th, where they secured the right to strike with 94% approval. During the strike, the union accused the company of using intermediaries to bring migrant workers to the picket line to exert pressure and weaken the strike's momentum. They also questioned the company's claim of 'no layoffs within two years,' suggesting it's a tactic to avoid severance pay, as employees who resign due to changes in the work environment might still not receive it. The company, 'Guai Guai,' expressed regret but respect for the strike and offered four commitments: a guarantee of no layoffs for two years before the relocation, an additional two months' salary on top of statutory severance pay if laid off after two years, a year-end bonus of at least 0.5 months' salary in 2027, and a 5% wage increase for all employees starting September 1st. However, the union...

Important Moments in History - Taiwan Chapter ① / 1996: Taiwan's First Direct Presidential Election / 'No Politics'

On March 23, 1996, Taiwan held its first direct election for President and Vice President. On this day, voters went to polling stations and decided the nation's top leader with their ballots, ending the long-standing system where the National Assembly indirectly elected the president. Looking back at the background, the 'Constitution of the Republic of China' promulgated in 1947 originally designed the president to be elected by the National Assembly. After the Kuomintang government relocated to Taiwan in 1949, the martial law regime continued for decades, with central legislative representatives not being re-elected for a long time, and presidential elections also being conducted indirectly by National Assembly delegates. Following the lifting of martial law in 1987, the termination of the mobilization for suppressing rebellion in 1991, and the full re-election of the National Assembly in 1992, the method of presidential election became a core issue for constitutional reform. In 1994, the National Assembly passed amendments to the constitution, stipulating that the president would be directly elected by the people, adopting a relative majority system. There were four candidate pairs in the first direct election: the KMT's Lee Teng-hui and Lien Chan, the DPP's Peng Ming-min and Hsieh Chang-ting, the New Party's Lin Yang-kang and Hau Pei-tsun, and independents Chen Lu-an and Wang Ching-feng. During the election campaign, mainland China conducted missile exercises and military intimidation in the Taiwan Strait from 1995 to 1996, and the United States dispatched aircraft carrier battle groups through the Taiwan Strait. The external pressure instead made the election a focus of international attention and stimulated discussions on democratic processes within Taiwanese society. The election results saw Lee Teng-hui and Lien Chan elected with 54% of the vote, and the turnout was about 76%. Supporters viewed this as a milestone in democratic consolidation, believing the principle of popular sovereignty was concretely realized. Critics, however, pointed out that the relative majority system might lead to insufficient legitimacy for the elected officials, and the national

Nantou's 'One Heart, Two Nights' Concert Wins Platinum at MUSE Creative Awards

The 'One Heart, Two Nights' concert, part of the Nantou World Tea Expo series, has won the highest Platinum award in the 'Event Category - Concert' at the 2026 MUSE Creative Awards in the United States. This marks the first time a concert from Nantou has received such international recognition, showcasing the city's aesthetic and curatorial prowess on the global stage. The MUSE Awards are organized by the International Awards Association (IAA) and are among the most influential events in the global creative design industry. Winning a Platinum award signifies that the work has achieved top consensus among the judges with a score of 85 or higher in visual design, technical execution, and creative narrative. Past international tours by artists like Mayday, JJ Lin, David Tao, and Jam Hsiao have also received this honor. The concert's core design concept was 'Intergenerational Musical Dialogue.' It was held at the large athletic field in the historically significant Zhongxing New Village, utilizing the low-density environment and open green spaces to create a sense of 'the city itself as the stage.' This was combined with the tea-scented atmosphere of the Tea Expo, making the concert not just a sensory feast but also an extension of Nantou's unique lifestyle quality. On October 3rd and 4th this year, the Nantou County Government will again host the 'One Heart, Two Nights Concert' at the Zhongxing New Village athletic field. The 'Soundwave Night' on October 4th features a strong lineup including Crowd Lu, Nick Chou, Yuan Chen, FEniX, Shawn Shang-Rong, P!SCO, KAXA, and Multiverse, who will take turns delivering powerful performances. Crowd Lu is expected to perform 6 songs for approximately 40 minutes.

Chang Gung Medical Week Focuses on AI and Smart Healthcare: Cheng Wen-Chun Emphasizes 'Technology to Reduce Burden, Warmth for P

As Chang Gung Medical System celebrates its 50th anniversary, it is hosting the '2026 Chang Gung Medical Week' from October 1st to 4th at the Linkou Chang Gung International Convention Center. With the spirit of 'Inheriting the Past and Opening the Future,' the event focuses on forward-looking topics such as artificial intelligence, smart healthcare, precision medicine, regenerative medicine, and organ transplantation. President Lai Ching-te attended the opening ceremony to deliver a speech, witnessing Chang Gung's half-century of medical development alongside domestic and international medical and academic representatives. Chang Gung Decision Committee Chairman Cheng Wen-Chun stated that Chang Gung, which began with Taipei Chang Gung in 1976, has now developed into a system integrating clinical care, research, and talent cultivation, serving over ten million outpatient visits annually. Facing the rapid advancements in generative AI and digital healthcare, he clearly pointed out that Chang Gung's promotion of artificial intelligence is not intended to replace medical personnel, but rather to alleviate the burden on frontline colleagues and empower clinical decision-making, "allowing medical staff to dedicate more time and effort to patient care, preserving the warmth of healthcare that technology cannot replace." In terms of concrete implementation, Chang Gung has established an 'AI Platform.' Frontline personnel propose needs, the hospital assists in development, and then it is promoted to various branches. Currently, applications such as voice input for nursing records and robots for transporting instruments in operating rooms have been introduced, all developed from grassroots ideas. The goal is to use technology to reduce the burden on human resources while improving medical quality. Conference Chairman Chen Chien-Tsung also emphasized that Chang Gung is not concerned with simply introducing AI, but rather whether AI can be safely integrated into clinical practice to assist medical teams in making more accurate judgments. Cheng Wen-Chun pointed out that precision medicine and new cancer therapies are

Discussion. Caning. PART 1

1. What is Caning? Caning is a form of corporal punishment, typically involving the use of a cane or similar implement to strike a person's body. Historically, it was used in many countries for judicial, military, school, or domestic discipline. While most European countries have now banned corporal punishment, a few countries worldwide still retain judicial caning, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and some regions that implement Islamic law. In Singapore, for example, caning remains a part of the criminal justice system. According to the 'Corner International' data you provided, various offenses in Singapore can currently be punished by caning, some of which are 'mandatory caning,' meaning the court must impose it when certain conditions are met. Applicable crimes include certain violent offenses, sexual offenses, drug offenses, and fraud. Therefore, the biggest difference between caning and general 'fines' or 'imprisonment' is that it directly incorporates physical pain as part of the punishment.

Indonesian Forest Fire Haze Spreads Across Borders!

The Indonesian forest fires have been ongoing for over a month, and the haze has spread to other Southeast Asian countries. The cross-border haze caused by the 2026 Indonesian forest fires has significantly worsened compared to previous years in terms of both burnt area and health impacts, becoming a severe regional environmental and public health crisis. 📊 Key Data Verification · Burnt Area: From January to July 2026, the total burnt area across Indonesia was approximately 202,000 hectares. While environmental groups estimate that an additional 600,000 hectares may have been added in August, the officially confirmed data already far exceeds the same period in previous years. · Respiratory Cases: As of September 21st, a cumulative total of 174,694 cases of acute respiratory infection have been reported in the seven provinces affected by the haze, with over 40,000 cases involving young children. The number of cases has sharply increased from approximately 113,000 in the past two weeks. 🔥 Cross-Border Haze Impact The haze has had a tangible impact on multiple countries: · Malaysia: Sarawak, bordering Indonesia, was the hardest hit. In early September, the western region entered a state of emergency, and 591 schools across the state were closed, affecting about 197,000 students. · Singapore: In early September, the 24-hour Air Pollution Index (API) in the central region reached 101, entering the 'unhealthy' range. This was the first time the API exceeded 100 due to haze since October 2023. · Other Regions: The haze has also affected parts of the Philippines and southern Thailand. Within Indonesia, over 3 million people have been affected across 7 provinces and 37 districts. 🌍 Crisis Causes and Regional Response · Root Causes: Experts point to human-induced slash-and-burn agriculture, draining of peatlands for plantations, and extreme drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon as contributing factors that have exacerbated the situation.
