Episodes 534-535: New Scars and the Whistling Man & Old Scars and the Detective's Soul★★★★

Continuing from episode 533-- With only three days left until the statute of limitations for the serial murder case expires, criminal psychologist Hirato Doji provokes the yet-unapprehended culprit on a TV show, only to be murdered shortly after, with a scar resembling a 'Z' left on his back. Ayumi and Haibara had seen a man whistling near the apartment, and Conan takes notice of this clue. The police suspect that Hirato's death is related to the serial murders that Superintendent Matsumoto has been investigating for years. In episode 535, Conan and Detective Takagi investigate the past three victims and discover that they all went out on Saturday nights, and the clues are all related to 'Mahjong'. The police gradually find a common link between the four victims and identify a man recently released from prison, but the case is not that simple. These episodes feature two murderers: the original Whistling Man (culprit of the serial murders 20 and 15 years ago) and a copycat who killed the Whistling Man. The Whistling Man's motive was absurd; to cover up his crimes and avoid ruining his future, he committed a more serious murder. However, in reality, some people do commit graver crimes to conceal their initial offenses. But if he had surrendered back then, he wouldn't have had to face revenge. The ending is also quite strange. The copycat seeking revenge was confident the police wouldn't catch him and didn't realize he was already suspected. He then knocked out Takagi and intended to take him hostage. I really don't understand this criminal psychology; it feels like a cliché plot by the scriptwriters for Sato and Takagi, who had just started dating, leading to a tragic scenario where one of them is in danger or even dies.

Episodes 532-533: The Scar of First Love & The Scar That Calls the Past ★★

Prestigious family daughter Shotoku Kurumi wins 100 million yen in the lottery and wants to find the boy who was injured protecting her in childhood to repay his kindness. However, two men appear claiming to be the savior from back then, and Kogoro Mouri is tasked with investigating their identities. During the investigation, the police believe one of them is connected to the unsolved case of Superintendent Matsumoto being slashed years ago. The culprit from that time also had a scar, and the police suspect he might reappear during this search for the boy. This case in these two episodes also links to a serial murder case from 15 years ago, and episodes 534-535 will continue to unravel it. I strongly felt Ran knew Conan was Shinichi. After Sleeping Kogoro deduced who the real savior was, she said that to Conan (Image 5) instead of saying something like 'Dad, you're amazing!' to Kogoro.

Episodes 530-531: The Truth Behind the Urban Legend (Part 1 & 2) ★★★

A series of attacks by a "hammer man" targeting women with long hair occurs in Mihama Town. Police investigate an apartment and find a man inside, collapsed and unconscious, apparently attacked. Conan finds suspicious clues from the three delivery people who entered and exited the apartment, the items inside, and rumors about the "hammer man." Finally, borrowing Sonoko's voice, he deduces and reveals the true identity of the "hammer man" and the truth behind the serial attacks. Conan's hiding spot was super obvious, right next to the main door, but everyone played along and pretended not to see him. These two episodes were great for enjoying the Sato and Takagi couple's public displays of affection. It was blindingly sweet. (The last four screenshots didn't end with a kiss; Conan interrupted... Can't stand seeing others happy when you're not in a good place yourself, huh?)

Episodes 528-529: Softness Conquers Mystery ★★★

Eri Kisaki accepts a request from former judo champion Yuko Arisawa to investigate her husband's suspected stalking. However, upon returning home with Eri, Ran, and Conan, they discover that Yuko's husband, Shirou, is already dead. The estimated time of death is around 9 PM, but Yuko was dining with Eri and the others at a hotel at the time, only briefly leaving her seat. As Eri and Conan investigate the scene, they gradually uncover inconsistencies between Yuko's statement and the physical evidence, ultimately solving the murder case that was designed using an alibi. What I found absurd was the killer's motive. She always admired her senior judoka, Hajime Kajimoto, but believed her husband Shirou was having an affair with Kajimoto's wife, ruining Kajimoto's family. Because of this, she harbored resentment towards her husband and decided to kill him. Simply put, she killed her husband because he ruined the happy family of someone she admired. While infidelity is wrong, I suspect she never truly loved her husband and was in love with Kajimoto instead. This episode also showcases the relationship between Kogoro and Eri. They clearly have feelings for each other, but a past case remains an insurmountable obstacle between them. The "third-rate detective" (referring to Kogoro) figured out the murder method even faster than Conan in this case, and that was just through Eri's retelling.

Episode 527: The Malice Hidden in the Mask Play★★

Kogoro, Conan, and Ran are invited to watch a theater troupe's rehearsal. However, accidents keep happening during performances of this mask play, so the troupe manager asks Kogoro to investigate and confirm the safety of the venue. Conan discovers that actor Komatsuka seems to intend to use a stage duel to kill Bannou, but it turns out more than one person in the troupe harbors murderous intent. Three actors each have their own schemes, and the stage, which was originally just for acting, gradually becomes a real danger zone. Conan is discovered by Komatsuka during his investigation and falls into danger, needing to quickly prevent the upcoming tragedy. The role of Kogoro checking the stage equipment in this episode was completely useless, as everyone acted after the checks... This episode doesn't have much substance; it's just three people trying to kill each other, but today, the Grim Reaper Conan won't let anyone die. He just teaches them a lesson and tells the viewers not to kill. Also, will the bottle caps Conan kicks, the ropes he throws, and the tranquilizer darts he shoots go undiscovered? Won't the police investigate?

Episode 526: A Gift from the Real Killer★★

Conan: Azusa's brother, Sugihito, is under police surveillance for allegedly murdering his boss. Conan finds a discrepancy in the evidence the police have. Later, Azusa receives a package claiming to be from her brother, which she uses as an opportunity to slip away from police watch. The discrepancy in the evidence and the photo sent by her brother provide him with an alibi, clearing him of suspicion. The real killer's words reveal their identity, but only Conan notices. What's the point of all those police officers watching the restaurant? The photo Sugihito sent to Azusa around the time of the incident was initially overlooked, but matching the times would have proven his alibi. However, the police were solely focused on his escape... Anyway, it was an episode to showcase Conan's deductive skills.

Episodes 524-525: The Hateful Blue Spark★★★★

Conan and his friends were driving to a campsite when their car ran out of gas. They asked for help from a man driving a vintage car, but he refused. Not long after, a garage at a mountain villa suddenly caught fire, and the man died. Conan is truly the Grim Reaper. He just wanted a ride to the gas station, but the deceased refused and was rude, and ended up as a charred corpse. I figured out early on that the killer was the fiancée, but Conan's explanation of the contradictions was really convoluted. Also, if Conan hadn't gone around asking others, the police probably wouldn't have figured out the murder method and would have just ruled it an accident. After seeing the motive for the murder, I can only say the deceased deserved it.

Episode 523: What I Really Want to Know★★

A murder case occurs inside a car on the highway. Shinichi and Heiji investigate three suspects to uncover the culprit and the murder method. Meanwhile, Shinichi and Ran have a conversation about their feelings for each other. The culprit went to great lengths and left various traces of their crime... And the culprit's motive really made my head spin. The victim lost a race, so they broke up and started dating someone faster. The victim wasn't having it and challenged them to a rematch, but it was during a storm, and the new boyfriend ended up dead. So the culprit wanted the victim to atone and never race again, but even though the victim said they wouldn't race anymore, nobody believed them... (Where did this motive even come from?) Shinichi pushed himself to finish the deduction despite the risk of suddenly shrinking. Couldn't Hattori have helped by speaking up? The picture shows Shinichi wearing Hattori's hat. At first, I didn't know why and thought they were going to announce their relationship.

Episodes 521-522: The Killer Washing Machine & Shinichi's True Identity, Ran's Tears ★★★★

Heiji takes Conan and the others to Higashi-Osu Village to investigate the murder of the village chief and his wife a year prior. The villagers resent Shinichi because of his deduction at the time. Conan catches a cold and accidentally takes the antidote, returning to his Shinichi form. However, he loses his memory and becomes a murder suspect. While investigating the case, Heiji tries to clear Shinichi's name, and Ran also faces danger as she searches for the truth. The culprit didn't even clearly see who entered the cabin before locking Conan inside. What if they locked up the wrong person? Didn't they even confirm? But if they had confirmed, there wouldn't be any further plot. This episode features three Shinichi faces (himself, Heiji, and the culprit), which is an interesting development. However, after watching it, I felt a strange, indescribable feeling. I don't know why. And then another case was tacked on at the end. The God of Death is indeed the God of Death; whether he's big or small, someone always dies. (I originally intended to skip this episode because I'd seen it many times before, but I ended up watching it and noticed a few more details.)

After 28 years, Heiji and Kazuha are finally together! 🎊

In Detective Conan episode 1216 (Japanese version) / 1276 (overseas version), Heiji and Kazuha are finally together! Heiji confessed several times before, but it never worked out. This time, it finally succeeded~~ I thought the confession was successful when I watched the movie 'The Million-dollar Pentagram' in theaters, but Kazuha couldn't hear it (T_T). It finally happened in this episode! By the way, Conan, when are you going to turn back into Shinichi? You've kept Ran waiting for so long......
