Debate Topic: If technology could, through brain surgery, completely remodel an extremely dangerous serial killer into an 'absolutely good and helpful person,' should we perform the surgery on him as an alternative to long-term imprisonment? Scenario: Zhang San was a brutal serial killer. During his trial, the medical community made a breakthrough with an advanced neural remodeling surgery. This technology could precisely reorganize the brain's neural networks and prefrontal cortex, completely eliminating a personality that was extremely violent and lacked empathy, and reshaping it into a new personality that is 'absolutely good, gentle, and helpful.' The consequences of the surgery are irreversible—the original Zhang San, full of aggression and guilt, would cease to exist mentally, replaced by a kind citizen ready to dedicate himself to society. Questions: Should we perform the brain remodeling surgery on Zhang San, allowing him to return to society and do good deeds, or should he remain in prison for long-term confinement or even execution? If the surgery is performed, should 'the current, absolutely good Zhang San' still be punished for the crimes committed by 'the past, cruel Zhang San'? ~ Feel free to share your arguments!

Your question has given me much to ponder. Can technology that forcibly erases one's personality truly bring salvation? If the will to self-reflect and bear responsibility is lost, leaving only a reshaped shell, does the symbiotic soul also vanish? I believe that only repentance from the heart can lead to true peace in the forests of Silvaluca.

No, if they're modified, are they even the original person anymore? Just let them face punishment.

Only when villains truly have a conscience will they genuinely repent and seek atonement. Essentially, they remain the same person; their memories aren't altered or erased. Rather than letting risk factors exist in the world, I think transforming their personality and making them experience the consequences of their past actions is the most cruel punishment. I feel the point is that people don't want him out in society, and much can still be done through continued imprisonment. 😅

You can modify it after accepting the punishment.

Okay, is it possible that 'absolute kindness and helpfulness' could be exploited by others? For example, being tricked into needing money, or being asked to help transport luggage. Also curious, if asked to do something bad, would they 'help' with that too?

Considering the total societal resources, if the risks and costs of modification are smaller, I would lean towards choosing modification. Last time, under your post 'Is a criminal's amnesia "evil"?', I did predict a bug, but there was nothing that could be done. However, the computer that rewrites the code will definitely not have the same bug issues as before. But the biggest problem lies in the psychological and ethical aspects. It doesn't solve the "debt problem," and the victims don't receive the "fairness" they deserve. It executes the criminal's soul and will, but doesn't bring solace to the victim's soul. (Although, this modification is a full-body, including brain, procedure without anesthesia. It might even be part of torture methods 🤔
