Introduction to Four Types of Warships: "What is a Cruiser?"
Among other warships of the early World War II era, such as battleships and destroyers, cruisers ranked below battleships in terms of firepower, defense, and size. Although all three were inferior to battleships, their speed was faster than battleships, compensating for the battleship's shortcomings. In a fleet, the role of a 'cruiser' was to patrol, scout, and perform routine missions. Weapon Systems Carried Main Turrets Torpedo Tubes Ship-based Helicopters (Seaplanes in WWII) Weapon Systems Added in Modern Times Land-attack Cruise Missiles Responsible for long-range strategic land strikes Anti-ship Missiles Anti-aircraft Missiles Close-in Weapon Systems (CIWS) After WWII, all battleships were phased out and replaced by aircraft carriers. Therefore, some might think that a cruiser's offensive weapons are more numerous and versatile than a battleship's. In reality, during WWII, they didn't have this many weapons and were primarily focused on reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare. Cruisers have other classifications, such as battlecruisers and light cruisers. Warships belonging to the cruiser category include: Russia's Kirov-class cruiser Japan's Sendai-class light cruiser Britain's HMS Exeter heavy cruiser
