Water shield was actually called wild lotus before. It started to be cultivated on a large scale in Meinong, Kaohsiung. To promote it nationwide, its name was changed to 'Shuilian' (water shield), playing on the similar sounds with then-President Chen Shui-bian and Vice President Annette Lu's names. That's why some people also call it 'President's Vegetable'.🤓

I used to eat water lotus a lot when it was cheap, and many hot pot restaurants use it as a soup base.
