Seahorse Fun Facts
Name Origin: Seahorses are named for their horse-like heads, with a curved head and a body at nearly a right angle. The scientific name Hippocampus comes from the "horse-headed sea monster" in Greek mythology. Extremely Slow Swimmers, Extremely Fast Hunters: Seahorses are among the slowest swimming fish in the world, yet they can inhale their prey (like copepods) faster than a human blinks. Monogamous and Hand-Holding: Most seahorses mate for life, and they "hold hands" by intertwining their tails and dancing each morning to strengthen their bond. No Stomach or Teeth: Seahorses have a very simple digestive tract with no teeth or stomach, requiring them to eat constantly to survive (up to 50 times a day).

And in China, they observed that male seahorses are the ones who nurture the young, and they considered this a favorable attribute for childbirth. So, they would dry male seahorses and have expectant mothers hold them during labor, believing it would bring good luck for an easy delivery.
