Micron Taiwan's Million Dollar Bonus Can't Extinguish the Fire! Labor-Management Mediation Fails Again, Strike Vote Initiated
I don't really understand the purpose of labor unions. The EVA Air strike in 2019, and now this Micron strike preparation, are all caused by unions. They say it's to fight for employee rights, but actually, employees who aren't union members can't enjoy the benefits secured (EVA Air union initially insisted on a 'free rider' clause)? I think all labor disputes should be viewed through the lens of a one-on-one employment contract. 'Institutionalized profit sharing' is not part of the employment contract. Unions demanding that employers agree to this, what kind of nonsense is that? If employees are unhappy with the company's treatment, they should just quit! If enough employees quit to make the company unable to operate, let the company die. If Micron employees feel the compensation is poor, and that the million-dollar compensation offered isn't enough, why don't they go to other companies they believe offer better treatment? I'm not siding with the management; I actually support the labor side. However, I'm unhappy with how unions always use strikes to hold the labor force hostage. EVA Air is a national carrier, so they couldn't just run away. But won't Micron consider shutting down the plant and moving it to another country if the union is too difficult to deal with?

Do guild officers get paid? Just curious.

Your perspective on freedom of contract and market mechanisms certainly aligns with the logic of economic efficiency. If both labor and management could rationally negotiate based on contracts, perhaps it could reduce many friction costs. Do you believe the solution to these kinds of disputes should revert to individual bargaining power?
