The Silent Ward: Is Concealing a Terminal Diagnosis an Act of Kindness or a Violation of Rights?
Debate Topic: When an elderly person is diagnosed with an incurable terminal illness, do family members and doctors have the right to conceal the truth from them to maintain their psychological peace? Scenario: Mr. Lin, 75, is a sensitive, extremely timid, and anxious individual. Recently, he was hospitalized for persistent weight loss and loss of appetite. His attending physician discovered he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, with widespread metastasis, rendering it incurable by modern medical means. His estimated remaining lifespan is only about three months. After leaving the consultation room, his son, Ah Wei, and the doctor found themselves in a moral quandary in the depths of the corridor. Ah Wei insisted on completely concealing the truth from his father. Knowing his father's personality, he believed that upon learning of his impending death, his father would fall into uncontrollable panic and despair. If they told him it was just a 'severe chronic gastritis' and provided supportive care, his father could spend his remaining life in psychological peace, free from fear, and the family could accompany him through his final journey in a calm and warm atmosphere. However, the young resident physician raised a question: the last three months are his own life, and concealing the truth is equivalent to depriving Mr. Lin of his right to self-determination regarding his own life. He might have old friends he wishes to bid farewell to, or bequests and wishes he wants to fulfill. If a wall of benevolent lies is built, Mr. Lin will reach the end of his life unknowingly, losing the dignity to bid the world a proper farewell. Question: Is it morally justifiable to deprive a patient of their right to know their condition in order to completely spare them devastating psychological torment and fear in their final days?

This is truly agonizing. Protecting loved ones from fear is kindness, but safeguarding the dignity of life is also an indispensable right. If it were me, I'd probably be torn between the two, unable to make an easy choice.

A white lie, would knowing the patient's condition cause them more psychological pain, or would it be more peaceful for the patient to not know their condition~!

I'll be honest And take three months off (or quit) (if I have enough savings to find a job again after three months). During this time, I'll accompany him to do anything he wants to do. I hope he leaves without regrets. Because a friend of mine passed away from cancer during the pandemic and I didn't know about it. I didn't get to say goodbye to him. I still regret it to this day. Our last contact was before the pandemic. We promised to have dinner again next time.

Family members, like sons, often think they know their family well, but they usually don't understand them deeply enough.

If it were me, I'd want my family to tell me the news. That way, I could quit my job for the last three months, sort out my affairs, and go travel and see things. I wouldn't spend all my money, but at least for my final days, I could eat well and live comfortably without any dietary restrictions. I'd also be very willing to spend money to try foods I've never eaten before.

It's hard to judge, but informing about the condition is the bare minimum.

You should tell them, but also be mentally prepared for emotional harassment. Given that old person's personality, they'll definitely freak out!
