From Self-Harm to Self-Love! She Grew a Beard and Set a Guinness World Record: 'This is My Beauty'
Harnaam Kaur from the UK discovered she was growing facial hair at the age of 11. A medical diagnosis revealed she had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), leading to excess male hormones and excessive hair growth. This was followed by school bullying, with classmates mocking and ostracizing her. She underwent waxing twice a week and even tried bleaching and shaving, but the hair grew back thicker. At 14, consumed by shame, she refused to go out, resorted to self-harm, and at one point, contemplated ending her life. At 16, she converted to Sikhism. This faith respects God's creations by maintaining hair, and she decided to stop shaving. "I no longer wanted to conform to a conventional female appearance." This decision marked the beginning of her reclaiming bodily autonomy. In September 2015, at 24 years and 282 days old, Kaur was recognized by Guinness World Records as the 'youngest female with a full beard,' with some strands measuring up to 15 centimeters. The record statement highlighted her overcoming years of bullying and embracing her appearance. The following March, she became the first woman with a beard to walk the runway at London Fashion Week. Today, Kaur is an anti-bullying and body positivity advocate, naming her beard 'Sundri,' meaning beautiful. She says, "Just as the earth produces flowers, our bodies produce hair." From victim to world record holder, she has penned her most powerful act of defiance with her beard. She encourages people on social media to embrace themselves, believing that true beauty comes from acceptance. She is frequently invited to speak, spreading her message of self-love. School bullying is truly unacceptable... yet it seems to persist everywhere, regardless of the country or time ☹️ It's incredibly fortunate that this girl was able to overcome her struggles 👏👏
