I'm planning to go to Kaohsiung for New Year's Eve this year. Does anyone have any special food recommendations or a must-try list?

Wow!! I highly recommend both Yue Long Men Hot Pot and E-Dai. If you like Japanese cuisine and Japanese izakaya style, you should try Hefengting. For Cantonese style, Haoshi Tai in Gangshan and Fengzhi Changdian, Zhisheng Suo in Nanzi are also good.
