Man Who Returned Lost Bag Sued, Asks 'Who Will Dare Do Good Deeds Anymore?'

In August 2024, a woman surnamed Wei left her bag in a seating area at Far Eastern Big City Shopping Center in Hsinchu. The bag contained about NT$1,500 in cash. A man surnamed Liu found it, placed it near the first-floor customer service desk, and notified the staff. However, when Ms. Wei retrieved her bag, she discovered the cash was missing and reported it to the police. Based on surveillance footage, the prosecutor's office determined that Mr. Liu had taken the cash and indicted him for theft. Mr. Liu protested his innocence, emphasizing that the surveillance footage did not show him taking any money. "Just because I found the bag, does that mean I'm responsible for the money the owner lost? If so, who will dare to do good deeds in the future?" The key issue is the time gap. Ms. Wei left the seating area about an hour before reporting the incident, and there was no surveillance footage during this window, making it impossible to rule out that the cash was taken by someone else before Mr. Liu arrived. After reviewing the footage, the judge determined that Mr. Liu did indeed take the bag, but the footage only proved he handled the bag and reported it to the service desk; it could not prove he stole the NT$1,500. The prosecution's evidence did not reach the level of "excluding reasonable doubt," and Mr. Liu was ultimately acquitted. The case can still be appealed. This incident highlights a real-world dilemma: when people try to help with lost items, the finder often becomes the prime suspect if any property is missing. Legally, the distinction between theft and embezzlement of lost property lies in whether the item is still within the original owner's control. But for the general public, the real lesson might be simpler: when you find a lost item, it's best to notify the service desk or the police directly and avoid touching it yourself, so that good intentions don't turn into suspicion. So, you can't blame people for being indifferent these days; there are just too many news stories about good deeds going unrewarded 😑

OMG, it's so upsetting to be suspected after doing a good deed! How did society turn into this? Kind people should be encouraged, but instead, we have to worry about being misunderstood. Peiise must feel so helpless seeing this, chu-lulu~😥

If there's no money at the start, does that mean you become a woman and commit fraud?

So now when I see someone dropped their wallet on the ground, I just ignore it. I can only hope the owner finds it themselves.

Seriously, trying to be nice backfires! In situations like this, is it best to just not pick it up for self-preservation? 🤔
