Don't want to get sunburnt while walking? Cool Map Taiwan's Vampire Map works in Taipei, New Taipei, and Taichung

Tired of getting burnt to a crisp while walking under the blazing sun? Three senior students from National Taiwan University's Department of Information Management have developed 'Cool Map Taiwan Vampire Map,' which plans walking routes that minimize sun exposure by simply inputting your start and end points. The team came up with the idea during their 'Network Service Programming' course, integrating public data such as Taipei City's 3D building models, street tree distribution, and covered walkways. They calculated shadow areas using tree canopy data and solar azimuth angles, then applied shadow formulas. The system offers both 'shortest path' and 'shady path' options. A real-world test from the NTU Main Library to the Department of Landscape Architecture showed the recommended route had an 82.6% shaded proportion, only taking about 1 minute longer. Beyond sunny days, the system also extends to rainy days and nighttime. For rainy days, it switches to a covered walkway mode, integrating flood map data to avoid easily flooded sections. At night, it prioritizes routes with dense street lighting from a female perspective. Currently, it covers Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Taichung City. The Taichung version includes 1.2 million buildings and over 110,000 street trees. In the month and a half since its launch, the system has accumulated 21,000 users, and at one point, it crashed due to excessive traffic. The team mentioned that the map also helps people with UV allergies, lupus, and others who cannot be exposed to direct sunlight, and they aim to expand it to all of Taiwan in the future. Although it's only available in three cities right now, some covered walkways are unusable, and some tree canopies have been trimmed and aren't as dense as before.
