Don't just drink anything when you have phlegm! TCM categorizes by cold/heat, Western medicine by infection, 6 soothing drinks r
Most of these everyday drinks primarily hydrate and soothe mucous membranes, rather than directly 'dissolving phlegm' or treating illness. White or clear phlegm tends to be 'cold' type, often due to catching a cold or exposure to wind-cold, possibly accompanied by feeling cold and runny clear nose. Yellow or thick phlegm tends to be 'heat' type, often from wind-heat or internal heat, usually with a sore throat and dry mouth. TCM categorizes by cold/heat, while Western medicine looks at infection; yellow-green thick phlegm might be related to bacterial infection, but it's not absolute. Six ways to drink: 🔹 Boiled White Radish Water: Hydration and nutrients help dilute phlegm, assisting with sticky phlegm, but severe coughs still require medical attention. 🔹 Rock Sugar Pear Water: Primarily for hydration and soothing dry throat; sugar content isn't low, so avoid excessive intake. 🔹 Ginger Brown Sugar Water: Suitable for cold-type white phlegm and feeling cold; if you have yellow phlegm and sore throat, it might worsen discomfort. 🔹 Dried Tangerine Peel Water: TCM uses it to regulate qi, dry dampness, and resolve phlegm, suitable for sticky phlegm or a lump-in-the-throat sensation, but it's auxiliary. 🔹 Light Salt Water: Has more evidence. Half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, gargle to reduce swelling and loosen mucus, then slowly swallow; don't use too much salt. 🔹 Honey Lemon Water: Honey can soothe dry coughs and itchy throats; water temperature should be below 60°C (140°F), and honey should not be given to infants under one year old. Phlegm Expulsion Tips: Drink plenty of warm water, then lie down or lean forward and have a family member gently pat your back from bottom to top with cupped hands; avoid spicy, greasy, or overly sweet foods for now; maintain indoor humidity at 50%-60%. These methods can make your throat more comfortable but cannot replace diagnosis and medication. If phlegm color is abnormal, you have a fever, difficulty breathing, or symptoms persist, seek medical attention promptly. Conclusion: These might help alleviate symptoms, but if you're really uncomfortable, it's best to see a doctor first and ask if these drinks are suitable for you~

Seeing how meticulously you've organized everything really puts my mind at ease. While you're reminding us to take care of our health, remember to drink plenty of warm water and stay warm yourself. Don't overexert yourself taking care of everyone else.

The Korean bottled citron tea is also great. Take a spoonful (make sure to get some peel and pulp) and mix it with warm water. It's really good for coughs and colds, and my kid loves it!
