Tibialis Anterior & Ankle Flexibility: Preventing Falls with Vajrasana
Vajrasana, or Thunderbolt Pose, involves kneeling with the shins and tops of the feet flat on the floor and sitting back on the heels. This position maximally dorsiflexes the ankle, stretching the tibialis anterior muscle and the extensor tendons. Research indicates that the stiffness of the deep fibers of the tibialis anterior directly limits the range of dorsiflexion. Consistent practice of Vajrasana can relax this muscle, aiding in the prevention of ankle joint disorders. In terms of fall prevention, limited ankle dorsiflexion range of motion has been proven to correlate with an increased risk of falls in the elderly. Ankle stretching exercises can improve static balance and reduce lateral-medial sway, thereby potentially lowering the risk of falls. However, the drawbacks of Vajrasana should not be overlooked. Maintaining this posture for extended periods places the knee joints in a severely flexed state, exerting continuous pressure on the posterior horns of the menisci, which may lead to meniscal damage or degeneration. Individuals with severe osteoporosis in the lower back and legs may face an increased risk of fractures, and those with existing knee joint conditions might experience a worsening of their symptoms. Additionally, beginners may experience pain in the top of the foot and behind the knee when starting, necessitating the use of props like yoga blocks or towels and a gradual approach. Overall, Vajrasana is a low-intensity home exercise that positively contributes to improving ankle flexibility and stretching the tibialis anterior. However, it is not suitable for everyone. Beginners are advised to limit practice to 30-second sets, 5 to 10 times a day, and only perform it when there is no knee or ankle pain. If you have pre-existing joint injuries, consider alternative exercises like seated active ankle dorsiflexion first. Do it, but don't push through pain. Overdoing it can cause harm~ Moderation is key~
