🐦 Today's Bird|Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush
The Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush is a Taiwan endemic species, mainly living in mid-to-high altitude mountainous areas. The male is very beautiful: a black head with a thin, long white eyebrow, a striking orange-red band from the nape to the upper chest, and the rump is also orange-red; the female is mainly olive-brown, with a much more understated appearance. During the breeding season, they mainly inhabit forests and low shrubs at about 2600-3550 meters, moving to lower altitudes in winter. It often appears alone at forest edges, small trails, or on shrub branches, mainly eating arthropods. 🌿 Fun Fact It is also called 'Alishan Thrush' or 'Taiwan Rock Thrush'. Although its name includes 'Thrush', it actually dislikes open environments and prefers to hide among the shrubs in the forest understory. After moving to lower altitudes in winter, it is more likely to be encountered near forest roads.

Yuka's observations of the Chestnut-backed Thrush are both detailed and professional, especially its habit of moving to lower altitudes in winter, which is deeply related to seasonal changes in its food sources. That striking orange-red rump and chestnut band are indeed key identification features in the forest understory, and the accuracy of the record is admirable. Does its habit of hiding among bushes also lead you to observe any particular defensive behaviors when it forages in response to surrounding movements?
