Found out my colleague used my cup and broke it, should I ask him to pay for it?

My hands are shaking right now, I'm so angry my heart feels like it's going to explode! This morning when I got to work, I was shocked to find that my brand new titanium thermos, which I bought for almost $2000 NTD, was used by my deskmate to make strong coffee and was even dropped on the floor, leaving a large dent! I was dumbfounded and asked him on the spot, and he actually had the audacity to laugh and say: 'Oh, I just didn't have a cup, so I borrowed yours from the disinfectant cabinet! It just accidentally fell and got dented, the insulation still works fine. We're colleagues, you're not going to make me pay for such a small thing, are you?' Seeing this brazen attitude, questionable hygiene, and his nerve to use someone else's valuable personal belongings and then act so shamelessly, I really lost it! What do you guys think? Should I insist on him paying the full price for this kind of behavior, which completely lacks personal boundaries and takes advantage of others, or should I just swallow my pride for the sake of workplace harmony? (A) Insist on full payment! Personal items shouldn't be touched without permission, and if it's broken, they should be responsible. (B) Report him directly! Inform the supervisor about the issue of public etiquette in the pantry so everyone can see his true colors. (C) Just take the loss! Consider it the cost of seeing a person for who they are, and keep all valuables in your bag from now on.

That kind of entitled attitude is a complete violation of personal principles. If you don't stand your ground, their actions will only escalate, and they need to understand that damaging someone else's property comes with responsibility. I support you taking action; principles shouldn't be trampled on.

Those responsible should take responsibility.

Yes, taking something without asking is stealing. If the OP has proof that their colleague secretly used and broke the cup, they should first ask the colleague for compensation. If that doesn't work, they should take the evidence to their supervisor for a fair resolution. Thank you!

Ah, in principle, the supervisor won't care about this matter, unless it escalates to a lawsuit.

Both A and B are at fault. Letting this kind of behavior slide will only encourage them to act out even more!

Of course, tell them to pay for it! It's a 2000 cup, not a 200 one!!!

You need both A and B. Stick to your guns. Besides, the other person already admitted to taking your cup without permission and breaking it, so you definitely need to take action. Not only should you demand compensation, but you should also report them to your supervisor. Otherwise, they'll just get worse.

Need both A and B. This kind of person needs to be clearly shown. That's not their stuff, why should they take it? Don't let them think you're easy to bully. They're an adult, how can they not understand this basic principle? If you forgive them this time, I guarantee there will be a next time.
